Re: [WIP] Jimny using Phev parts

Just a quick update - some posts can be found on my sons LinkedIn page https://www.linkedin.com/in/chris-meek-engineer/

The major mechanicals are done, motor is in, prop is back from build & balance and the inverter and charger are mounted under the car where the fuel tank was. 24KWH of batteries ...

Outlander rear inverter DC connections

I should know the answer to this as i've been here before but my notes don't record this...

Which of the DC in connections on the Outlander rear inverter is the positive ? I think its the left hand one (i.e. next to the motor wires) in this picture as this has the 30a and 40a fuses on the two small ...

BMW 330e batteries-mounting

I'm using 2 packs of 12kwh BMW battery modules in my Jimny build.

In my last build i secured each of the 12 modules to a board and screwed them down through the heatsink mounts in the end so they were supported along their entire length

In this build, i need to stack the modules 3 high, and I want ...

Re: SBox - do I need to open precharge relay to run

What setup are you using to control the SBox? This has been implemented in Zombie code, so just have a look there.

I am using a Teensy 4.1, i didn't go the official zombie route as when i did my first conversion some 4+ years ago I started with the Prius inverter with Damiens drop in board ...

Re: SBox - do I need to open precharge relay to run

Does anyone know which messages are sent. I ask because with a resistance meter across the positive in & out terminals, i can see precharge has 160ohm resistance when I close negative and precharge contactors (0xA6)

When I switch to all closed (0xAA) the resistance stays at 160, where I know if i ...

SBox - do I need to open precharge relay to run

Using the Sbox and assumed the order would be:-

1) Neg & precharge contactors close and wait (0xA6)
2) Positive contactor close and wait (0xAA-all close)
3) Precharge contactor open

I can't find a way of making step 3 work, perhaps it isn't necessary ?

what have people done when using the SBox ?

Re: Does Prius gas pedal contain electronics

Nope. Re using one I made for the last project. It’s easy with the phev inverter as you only need to send it one number over can.

Also I want to tune the regen and add eco mode and speed limiting etc

Does Prius gas pedal contain electronics

The wiki says power it with 5v, but I'm using a 3.3v Teensy.

Does the pedal contain electronics that need 5v, or is just a pair of pots with gnd and vcc across the resistor ?

I can scale the return to 3.3v, but i'd rather not if its not required and i can use 3.3v across it.

PTC heaters

what do people favour for cabin heating ?

Ebay PTC heaters from breaking vehicles seems to be able to be had for a reasonable price, but I didn't see definitive articles on the wiki that detail how to drive them.

I see this new heater https://www.classicretrofit.com/products/400v-ptc-brick-heater ...

[WIP] Jimny using Phev parts

So after my first EV project met an untimely demise, my son and I are embarking on my second conversion.

This project has been approved as his main engineering project at Silverstone UTC, and I was keen to do another, as a short range EV definitely has a use in our household. So much so we're ...

Prius Inverter board for sale

Board Gen 3 V1c with regulator mod for esp8266.

History is that I had this in a prius inverter with an Outlander rear motor and i experienced some issues that gradually over time got worse until the car became untrustworthy. At that point i pulled the prius bits and went vcu.

I never did ascertain ...

Re: Motor to gearbox couplers

so since my first post i've discussed with a few people, inc a gearbox specialist, a custom motorbike builder and a fellow racer.

The consensus seems to be that at speed the harmonics across the shafts exacerbate the natural spline movement. And by making the coupling flexible this in fact makes ...

Motor to gearbox couplers

My E46 conversion has just knocked out the second version of the coupler.

For context, i removed the 2l diesel lump from the bmw and fabricated an adapter plate for an Outlander motor so the shafts had a 1cm gap between the tips. Line up felt good, with 1mm or so in 1 plane, spot on the other.

The ...

Re: [DRIVING] BMW Touring + phev motor & inverter

I knew i would jinx it by saying how well it was going.

Coupler gave way without warning on the way to take nipper for an exam. This time it has stripped the splines on the gearbox end of the coupler. There do seem to be two versions of the clutch driven plate around. The one i used for this has ...

Re: Brake servo Vacuum hold time.

for whats its worth, i started with a small reservoir, but deleted it and run the pump direct to the servo. It kicks in as you would imagine, after most presses of the pedal and on start up.

Oddly when the weather is cold it kicks in more often. I suspect a slight leak somewhere.

See if you can find my Prius thread from when I started with Prius motors etc. on mobile so can’t link to it easily.

The upshot is there are syncoff points which look right but only one is really right.

There is also a Prius thread about achievable output and on the back of that I swapped to a ...

Re: BMW 330e pack balancing

Just by way of an update. I dropped the rest period altogether. As I have a gen1 and gen2 pack i did notice the gen1 pack occasionally stops balancing for 30 secs of its own accord and then comes back on plus it takes 50 secs to start balancing whereas the gen2 pack is instant on and stays on.

Touch wood but it is running well.

Managed to sort out the front BMS and balance the pack, and the new coupler is doing its thing. It's a daily driver for me or the wife as an overnight charge is 3p/mile - well happy at the moment.

So in the end i modified the code to do 12mins of discharge, followed by 30 secs of rest time and this ate into the delta much more quickly, though it still took a few days.

From the temps i can't see a need for a rest period but I'm sure there was a good reason. However i think i 'll modify the ...
