There is a possibility you messed up you CAN wiring. lacking termination resistor could be an issue it does not have to be.
The modules are completely silent, so that's worrying.

Possible I messed up the canbus wiring but it's the original BMW loom that was working before the experiment, so I'm not sure how. I've been through it all and tested for continuity and shorts.

Failure of the 5V supply or ground would be the obvious answer but fairly confident I've ruled that out. I'm going to check again though because that's the only thing that really makes sense to me.

Battery open and checking each one by one is the only way then. Buzzing it through to ensure continuity. I have witnessed them fail by being supplied 12V instead of 5V have not had any fail or heard of any beyond that.

Pulled open one of the CSCs and did a continuity test for CAN H/L, 5V and GND between there are the BMS. All coming through fine. 120 ohm between H and L.

They've definitely not had 12V.

There's probably a really stupid explanation that I'm missing but stumped if I know what it is.

Thanks for your help.

Very strange. I would start moving the CSCs about to see if the one that is working is the only one that works on that module.

I would be surprised if they just died as they are also coated pcbs, and one of them still works. 4/5 failure at the same time would be unexpected.

You have a bench test pack right? I would get that working so you can see a few or all modules, then swap some CSCs in and out.

It's the bench pack I'm working on. One in the car seems fine. And as far as I can tell, none of the ones on the bench is working. It's really weird. Like I say, I'm probably doing something really stupid but I can't work out what it is.

andybpowell wrote: Sat Sep 09, 2023 4:44 pm There are enough people out there using these modules and lots of speculation on what they are capable of but little real world data
I'm running at
3.2v min
4.1 max
200A continuous
in recent drag race style running i operated with a 2P 34ah pair of packs on
max 4.2
min 2.8 - ((this was a bit mute though cos below 3.5 the performance dropped sharply)) (EDIT: this might not be true, it turns out I think I have an inverter temperature issue that is shutting me down)
due to mains power operational restrictions I was limited to 3kw of charging essentially charging each brick in the pack to 67.3v @ 15a. the temp rose just 2 degrees
in testing I tried running just a single pack (34ah 82kwh rated) to feed the leaf 160kw EM57, it didnt work well and lacked any kind of wallop. in under 5 mins/ 2miles of running though it took the pack temp to 66 Celsius. it didnt blow up or catch fire. I waited until it had cooled to 30c before putting any charge in.
In later runs I used 2 full packs in parallel, it performed much better. [EDIT] 06/2024 I got a Citini BMS for BMW packs from @tom91, its works well, it interrogates the stock modules and collates the management data very effectively. Once I had better data I became braver charging the individual bricks using 15a Li-Ion chargers, they take the cells to 4.22v before cutting out, this results in a nice 405volt full pack, the bricks dont warm up at all even when subjected to this charging but its only 15a. In the boat I can then give them a good wringing and on the last test I pulled high power for over 12 mins pretty much 14 laps which is a project goal. Min voltage was 308v peak amps was 493a. the isa shunt reported 97c but I didnt get a battery temp reading, they were warm but not ridiculous

both packs have the 'gubbins' for the BMW cooling/heating system but no gas as I dont have all the bits yet to complete the HVAC system. I am considering just cooling them with glycol or dilectric fluid (just in case it leaks) if anyone has any views on that?

What would be involved in retrofitting this pack into ann existing hybrid? Seems like this pack could really transform a prius.

This is very dependant on what the vehicle expects. Most likely you need a new BMS master that then takes the information from the modules, measures current, controls contactors and then talks to the vehicle.

Hi. Can you tell me what current is allowed to charge 34Ah cells at subzero temperatures? (-15°C)

Hey 24 kWh battery hackers, I've tried adding the details to the Wiki:
https://openinverter.org/wiki/BMW_Hybri ... ifications
and
https://openinverter.org/wiki/Batteries#OEM_modules
@nkiernan, since you have it open (viewtopic.php?p=68794#p68794), can you confirm some of the measurements, especially the module weight?

TBH i have a 2022 mini EV...been in a collision..been repaired...now too flat to charge..

So i have remove and split the HV battery and charged up the cells...reconnected everything...And replaced in the car.

Now i have 12 fault codes for all csc modules...
Ive removed and pinned out can h+l and all are reading 42.8/43 ohms.....all of them..

Ive checked all 12 csc plugs for 5v +--...all good.

so from what ive just been reading all my 12 modules are scrap////

on another note i have seen a link to bmw I3 module...where all csc modules just pack up...contactors open..and vehicle no start.

Any help on this would be appreciatted as im removing and refitting the HV battery everytime...

Ps...Im trying to get a teensy working...

Not alot of experience on this forum working on actual full BMW hybrids or EVs or even reusing the packs outside the cars as a whole.

I have X5 pack and I'm wondering the voltage range of that.

Where did you find that 24kWh X5 pack has NCM811 cells?

Specs about NCM811 says that you could charge them even up to 4.5V but to prolong the life of the battery, max 4.2V is recommended. Minimum charge 2.5V .. but 3.0V is recommended. So in the end, I guess the same range as most of the cells.

in this video we extract the six battery modules out of the first 12 kWh BMW hybrid battery pack and lay them out flat on a workbench and start planning how we will wire them

Help! As newtis.info site is gone and I couldn't find any wiring info related to BMS module wiring, could someone help me how to connect the wires into BMS Master plug. (BMS Module 0). This is X5 G05 pack with white master board and 12 modules (24kWh). In the picture, PIN1 is bottom left.
Master-bms-plug.png
SME-CSC (ecu side) looks like this (gen2)

And here are all the wires that need to go into that blue plug.
bms-master-plug.jpeg
This happened because I accidentally disassembled the wrong blue plug, I was planning to unplug wires from the ecu side plug :|
