Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Hey elShankos, good to see you are making progress! I'm in Cape Town as well, and moving at the same pace. I've managed to get a Zombieverter properly configured on the bench, so if you need and help with wiring things up do let me know - happy to meet up and debug if needed.
Nice one man - do ...

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Hi All, been a while since I did an update so here goes:
I got the engine, transmission, propshaft and rear diff + fuel tank out:

And then I spent a LOT of time scanning all sorts of things - I'm getting a lot better at scanning after overcoming the initial learning curve!

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Hi All, I guess this is an update?
Project finally restarting now due to:
1) Had to get a second car before pulling the engine from the Subaru - eventually got a 94Ah BMW i3 for a decent price - amazing car really!
2) Had to finish the Vespa - bought if for R13k 10 years ago, sold it for R35k ...

Hi, I have been pondering the same thing for my SDU setup - what have you come up with so far?

Thanks a lot for sharing all this info - super helpful as I'm about to pull the engine out of my Legacy GT (3rd Gen) to build battery boxes up front. Did you do any 3D modelling to plan the space at all? Just curious.

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Hi All, I thought I would post a mini update on my build:
- was overseas for a month!
- Now I finally have to refurbish and sell this original Vespa I have had in my garage for the past 6 years as its taking up space where I need to put the subaru to pull the engine etc:

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Great to see a open discussion on this as I've also been agonising over all the possible ways of architecting my own system. My current layout looks basically the same as yours, but I'm using M3 DU with an as yet undetermined VCU (a bit heretical to say it on OpenInverter even as a Damien patron ...

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Looks great!
Small note. A/C and PTC heater (if you're gonna add one) are fused with 40A in the FHVJB.

Hi,
I've got a rear SDU going into a subaru rear subframe and I've been trying to find a diagram etc to show what the tilt angle should be. Did you have any luck with yours?

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Just a mini update: so I got my bench test of the SDU done - I powered it off my Lifepo4 48V DC home battery system as a test and made this powerfully average Youtube video here:

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Also, in South Africa, why not buy lithium cells from the solar suppliers? I know they are lifepo4 rather than li-ion and therefore a bit bigger, but they require way less cooling consideration, and you’d avoid all the import hassle.
Hi, so the lifepo4 cells are cool and also safer but they don ...

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Very interested in seeing how you get on with this. I have a 4th gen Legacy spec B which I've had for 16years now. Would love to convert it but the ridiculous UK rules on not changing the road tax following an EV conversion mean it doesn't make sense to.
Curious about your connection to the ...

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
So I decided to make an alternative wiring diagram with the following 2 main differences to the Rev 3 above:

Re: Subaru Legacy + Tesla SDU Conversion
Quick questions on your HV wiring.
-Why is there no contactors on the HV negative?
-You need precharge on the auxiliary components too
Hi, thanks for the queries. On the main -HV contactor Q, I'm kind of following aber333's advice as I can't really see the benefit of having a second contactor ...

Hi All,
So.. I started out on the DIY Electric Car forum but it occurred to me that it would actually be better to put my build here as it's based around the OI conversion route. I had a bit of a thread here: https://www.diyelectriccar.com/threads/subaru-legacy-tesla-sdu-conversion.208076/

I hate when people say "read". Yes, reading is good, but sometimes you've been staring at the problem for so long that nothing makes sense anymore and need another head to help alleviate some of the uncertainty. I had the same questions when I was first starting and had to go investigate.
Take a ...

Re: Tesla SDU+OI - how to shut down safely?
Never NEVER allow inverter or other VCUs to DISCONNECT your DC contactors at its whim! You setup DC link in such a way that inverter can control contactors innitially, but when on they can be turned off ONLY by removing 12V from them (turn ignition key). That is called latching relay circuit.
You ...

Re: Tesla SDU+OI - how to shut down safely?
I use a PWM signal to pull the accelerator or brake pedal more or less to zero. With this I prevent over and under voltage of the battery, as well as blocking or spinning of the rear axle.
Thanks for this - I think this is a really good idea and I recon I can do this with an available signal ...

OK!
What i did was use a bit longer cable, routed it around the alu wall and i fixed the Wifi module on the other side over the charger module. It seems i get less disturbance that way. Using Lolin Wemos D1mini i get wifi signal some 5m from the car now. Go figure.
This is probably a better ...

I opened up the brake pedals switch out of curiosity and inside its just a sort of slider switch with 2 sides - NO/NC:

Hopefully useful for others who might wonder about it too.

I left out all the sockets, and just used the header, but didn't set it all the way down and carefully soldered in place... would this work for you? I'm using it in an inverter, so I can't tell if this would fit in the Tesla charger.

Ok, so I've been silently watching and building. Well, the time has come to join in. I have a 14 Chevy Silverado 2500 that had a Duramax. Drivetrain is gone. Fuel tank is staying as I'm adding a 22kW diesel range extender. I have added a 1st gen Chevy Volt battery where the exhaust went. It ...
