[WIP] Porsche 986 Boxster

Post by Tomas »

So Boxsters have been converted to electric by many people by now and most of them has gone with Tesla motor. I have chosen to go with a complete 160kW Leaf stack. Sure it does not have the power of a Tesla but it's still more than my car had with ice. Haven't got the battery yet but aiming for a 40kWh.

Have some more parts to remove before I mount the motor and all the other stuff

Nice Project. Are you going with the leaf battery?

If anyone has files to 3D-print covers for gen 3 Leaf motor, inverter and pdm I'm interested as I have to split the units

Gen 3 motor is the same as the gen 2 i believe so you can probably find those. I think Brat has dome some as well as EVLandcruiser and some others were posted on the DIYElectriccar forum

How are you going to control the Leaf Inverter?

The stock CAN control will not allow full speed in reverse, unless you flip the two phases and resolver wiring.

I haven't decided if I go with Zombieverter or Resolve-ev controller. I will flip the resolver wiring and as I split units the phase-swap will be easy

Making the drivetrain electric shouldn't be that much trouble (at least I think so..) but the other bit, make a heater work and sending can bus signals to the car so all warning lights and things like that don't remains on is a bit harder. So if anyone have a nice solution or can point me in the right direction, I would be most thankful. I guess a Teensy or Ardinou can do It. I want a water heater (Preferably vag as they are easy to source here) so I can keep all the HV stuff in the back. The temperature can be set by a potentiometer if it makes it easier. The car was bought with engine and gearbox already removed so no possibilty to take can logs.

What year of Boxster is it? Other have the CAN already working for the gauges for certain years.

Regarding Heater, if you run a Zombieverter this is easy. The biggest challenge will be how to tap into the heater dial. But as you say a simple extra Pot can be added to be used.

It's a 1997 that came with tiptronic automatic gearbox. It have climate control but I have ripped out the ac part. Mounting a pot would be easy tough

You want Zombie to control the rest. It all depend on what you need controlling.

You want a heater - use zombie
You want DC fast charging - use zombie
You want fancy gear selector and logic - use zombie
You want vehicle integration via CAN - use Zombie

The zombie is a VCU so it manages all things and the higher level vehicle states and HV system state.

@tom91 would it be possible to add Boxster to zombie as a vehicle as it's a fairly common car to convert?

Anything is possible, yes it is possible but will need someone that can do the testing and logging and feedback.

Need to get info from others who got it working in order to implement.

Swapped the Leaf gear for a Tesla Sdu. Got my hands on the last oi-board from Johannes. Will probaly go for a zombieverter also. Soon it's time to heat up my soldering iron
