Ariya AM67 motor

Post by itiuk »

Hi all, just throwing the idea out there. I am considering using the AM67 as an alternative to the EM57 as part of a conversation project in working on.

The AM67 is a permanent-magnet-less motor with the rotor coils being powered via slip rings. I like the concept, and it appears to have better efficiency than a PM motor at high rpm. There are several videos online tearing down and reviewing this motor, but as of yet I cannot find any dimensioned drawing or 3D models/scans.

Eyeballing it, it looks to be a bit more compact than the EM57, with the inverter packaged with it being smaller than the EM57's inverter.

It produces 160 to 178kW and 300Nm up to 4400rpm out of the box and spins up to 13000 rpm.

Has anyone else looked into these? Does anyone know of any engineering drawings or cad/scans?

It’s an interesting motor, which I’m sure we will start seeing more show up In wrecking yards.

The biggest concern would be control over the motor inverter package.

Hopefully as straightforward as the leaf motor essentially requiring a torque request over can.

For simplicity sake I’d stick with a leaf motor. Tried and true.

Understood, but I'm up for a challenge... 😊.

I've found that a similar motor with a different designation is used in the Renault Scenic E-tech and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross EV which might be easier to source.

I can feel a speculative purchase coming on. 😀

From what I have read, Ariya is based on Renault-Nissans CMF -EV platform. So there is a good probability that these are used as is in several models across the alliance, which would be a great thing for upcoming years when these start to become better available at wreckers too.

Also, I found this Nissan technical review No.88, Article 6. could be interesting.

If you take on the exploration of this, do share the findings. This is an interesting thing :D

Thanks for the article. It's interesting that it puts a lot of emphasis on NVH improvements.

My simple assumption would be that with similar connectors come similar communication methods/requirements. Although I can't find much information yet on the wiring harnesses, it looks like the data connector is the same or similar to the one used on the EM57. So at least that's a hypothesis to investigate...

I've also noticed that where Nissan (with the Ariya) has this motor stamped as "AM67", Renault seems to have it stamped as "AM406". However, searching for this doesn't come up with anything useful. I've also seen it listed as "EM87".

Another potential part number to search for is "290307254R" which appears to be linked to both Nissan and Renault versions.
