Prius gen 3 pro/con list. Swap logic board or ZombieVerter

Post by r1ckyb0nd »

I have read a lot of posts on here. Some great information. I was wondering if there is a comprehensive list of the pros/cons of the two different options. Replacing the logic board or using ZombieVerter?

Like for the ZombieVerter conversation being limited to 52MPH, is this an issue with the logic board swap?

The 52 MPH limit will not be a limitation with the logic board swap since we do not have any Toyota firmware limitations with the open source firmware. It is possible there could be a work-around for the Toyota limits, but to my knowledge this limitation has not been unlocked.

Just to note, you can still use zombie with a replacement logic board using the OI inverter option.

Using stock board you're stuck with the stock limits, must use Prius motor (other Toyota/lexus seems to also work).
You'll not have to do any manual motor tuning with this option.

The replacement logic board has direct control and can therefore use the inverters potential without any Toyota restrictions. Right up until the inverter shuts down to protect its self. You're able to use motors that aren't matched and you can combine MG1 + MG2 on to a single motor.
The downside of this is that you'll need to manually configure and tune the motor params for your setup. This can take quite a bit of time. The param database does exist, but not widely used
A dual motor replacement logic board exists, with the added complication of tuning 2 motors that are likely physically coupled.

The replacement logic boards have control of the buck boost too, so you can buck down your system voltage to use the in built DCDC . Though you can also do the resistor mod to get it working with higher voltages.

I'm not sure if the resistors mod and bridging the buck boost out has been tested with stock board. It should work as far as I can tell, but not confirmed.

I ran a replacement logic board for 8k miles, combined MG1 and MG2. The inverter cut out at about 430 phase amps.

What is the reason you would want both zombie and board replacement?

Interconnectability and control of other units from the zombie with additional power/flexibility from the OI board.

Zombieverter VCU does more than just spin a motor. The replacement logic board does nothing to help with vehicle integration, charge control, heating etc.

While a replacement logic board can be fudged to do some of this, it's not ideal and you'll likely need some other system to control the charger for example, then you have to deal with which system handles the main contactors.

Ideally you just want the replacement logic board to handle spinning of the motor and some VCU to manage state etc.

This is actually something I've been wondering as I have a leaf OI v3 board and zombie.
Does the zombie connect and control the OI board via CAN only?
Tune the motor with the OI board but all control is via zombie?

Yes, see above topic for how to get it working. Will look at simplifying it and cleaning some things up.

Yes.

I think Tom was working on getting zombie to automatically configure the OI board can mappings like he did for foccci too.
