Leaf PDM coolant direction - Johannes’ tear down

Post by ianlighting »

In my project I am relocating the PDM, so it is separate from the inverter. It would help my coolant routing if the flow could be reversed, so it goes in the out hole and out the in hole.

Johannes did a great tear down video where we get to see the internal circulation guidance. Here’s a still shot…

From what I can see, I don’t see why I couldn’t reverse the flow. Does anyone have any opinions on this?

Great video!
With Outlander inverter, heater and charger you gert two temp sensors. One on each output pipe. Their signal goes out as CAN telegram byte report. So one of those is allways a bit higher (output) than the other.
And if you change coolant flow what you need to do is adjust the order of CAN bus reading otherwise you may end up with negative values for your VCU. Otherwise i dont see any difficulty in switching coolant flow as long as the motor is the last in line before the radiator. This because it can survive much higher temp than inverter or charger.

Ah, interesting point about comparing the relative temperatures. I don’t know about the Leaf’s sensors, but will look into it. Don’t think there’s anything inline along the pipes but might have missed it.

Order of the stock leaf flow:
PDM — Inverter — motor — radiator —

I plan to stick to that order.
