2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
Hello,
Does anyone have an opinion on the best EV salvage battery to meet the following characteristics:
- 100kg weight limit
- 80kw peak
- 30kw continuous
- Abundant in the EU
Bonuses:
- Bundled BMS that integrates with zombieverter
- No cooling _or_ integrated cooling
- Highest energy density possible
- Highest cycle design life possible
Use case:
- Short range drive of a VW T3 kombi, driven on front diff. Rear diff will be driven by ICE.

What voltage range?
Is the weight including or excluding the housing and all other required components?
You are going to struggle to find anything really with these specs. Like really hard.
Have a look here: https://openinverter.org/wiki/Batteries

Voltage range 300v-400v.
Not counting housing.
I think if I can get 15kwh I'll be happy.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
There also BMW hybrid 12kwh cells that damien tested. About 2ke too. Both VW and BMW are in their casing which means they are easier to handle and transport by truck.
Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
The main issue is the smaller hybrid packs are not as energy dense as they're setup for power.
For instance the BMW packs are ~6.5kg per kWh, the VW ones are in the 8-9kg range.
The best batteries are in the 4.5kg range, but are arranged in such a way that 100kgs of them isnt going to give you 400v.
100kgs worth of id3 12s modules for instance is only getting you ~36s.

I consider full power from vw hybrid packs only if you use liquid cooling.

Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
This is why I posted the question - one seems to need to compromise somewhere. Given the fact that I am going for a hybrid setup, I should probably just look for the best hybrid battery I can find since I won't be able to build anything better than a large OEM engineering team.
@m.art.y how much does that X5 battery weigh? Google isn't giving me an answer. I'm going to guess around 200kg.

Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
I have 11 modules out of 12 and one module is 12 kg. 11 modules still give you 88S and ~316v nominal at 132 kg without the casing. 12 kwh BMW pack would be even lighter but the capacity is just half.Scrappyjoe wrote: ↑Wed Mar 20, 2024 12:13 pm @m.art.y how much does that X5 battery weigh? Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
I think the modules/cells are the same as the other BMW ones, they're just configured as 8s rather than 16s and theres twice as many.

Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit
22kwh for 132kg sounds pretty good. The BMW modules sound like a good bet - but I need a higher nominal voltage.
At any rate this all sounds promising so I’ll ping my shipper and see how adventurous they are feeling
