[WIP] [BOAT] Single Seat F2 Race catamaran
[WIP][FIRST DRIVE / FUNCTIONAL]
We have been working on a record attempt electric boat. BMW hybrid packs, Nissan Leaf, Zombieverter. We took it to the famous Coniston Records week and achieved a certified 82MPH. I would of liked a little more but we learned a lot about attempting electric records and about the rig itself. The OEM stock software controls ultimately limited the attempt but hoping to move to a Johanes board to bypass the pitfalls.
My brothers employer A and M EDM amedm.co.uk took our designs and did the machining work for us resulting in a very neat OEM look to the conversion. We are using the standard tried and tested Mercury Marine race leg to provide the final drive which is essentially a 90deg gearbox with the leaf EM57 on one end and race prop on the other. We use 2 BMW hybrid packs pararalled together, essentially 96s2p. I havnt got any standardised charging figured out yet and would like to go to chademo but in the short term we use 3x 1kw li-ion chargers to 67.2v per hybrid brick off the mains.
The politics have been fearsom with many new unique and novel criteria being required before it even got wet but we got there in the end this year. Next year Im suspecting the hurdle will be much higher!

This looks incredible Ted!
Let me know if you want any help with charging this at a higher rate.

UPDATE
06/2024 I got a Citini BMS for BMW packs from @tom91, its works well, it interrogates the stock modules and collates the management data very effectively. Once I had better data I became braver charging the individual bricks using 15a Li-Ion chargers, they take the cells to 4.22v before cutting out, this results in a nice 405volt full pack, the bricks don't warm up at all even when subjected to this charging but its only 15a. In the boat I can then give them a good wringing and on the last test I pulled high power for over 12 mins pretty much 14 laps which is a project goal. Min voltage was 308v peak amps was 493a. the isa shunt reported 97c but I didn't get a battery temp reading, they were warm but not ridiculous.
gunna try and get the cooling working on the packs to see if I can keep a handle on the temp.
Im still suffering from the motor temp spiking and causing the inverter to go into limp mode. I don't know why that is yet, possibly an air lock in the motor casing as it is on end compared to the car, or maybe Im just wringing it all to hard for the stock leaf inverter, I don't know yet. I have another race day coming up on the 15th so will be trying several options in different tests to see if I can flush out more performance and gain some longevity

This is so awesome! Good luck in your next race. Would love more photos and video of this thing ripping! What's it like to drive compared to the previous engine?

Re: [WIP] [BOAT] Single Seat F2 Race catamaran
Thanks! I’ll ask someone to vid some this WE. As for driving it’s a bit like driving an anvil at the moment. the established class is 200hp on a 390kg rig. of course I save a few KG on the motor, fuel tank and pump, the EM57 is quite a bit lighter but i’ve added 160kg of battery pack and ancillaries which if you consider that half the weight of the original rig doesn’t seem that surprising, not to mention the CofG is miles out. ultimately I’m gunna need a bigger/different boat to handle the weight but first things first

Well, we went to records week on Coniston Water again. we did better but not quite as well as I would of hoped but still a decent 92mph. someone recorded a tiktok vid and we were together enough to have a GoPro attached and on during the fastest run so that is here as well. Ill also post the CAN logs of a couple of runs as they hold some interesting numbers on how and how not to do things...fill yer boots!

Re: [WIP] [BOAT] Single Seat F2 Race catamaran
that would be good, sadly no one has one near a lake
There is type2 in the boating centre that I was hoping to use but I couldn't get it working off a Leaf charger before I needed it.
Im hoping to rig up a CCS/Chademo from a big onshore battery I can tow along to the event. Thats one of my projects in the off season but getting it to charge off the mains would be a big leap forward for me...
Re: [WIP] [BOAT] Single Seat F2 Race catamaran
I’m not trying to do any speed records but would love to chat with you. Been trying to figure out how to do an ev conversion on my outboard and have a ton of questions.

Did you remove the dog clutch? Keep the dog clutch and just remove the ability for the EV motor to run in different directions?ted.walsh wrote: ↑Tue Nov 07, 2023 1:31 pm [WIP][FIRST DRIVE / FUNCTIONAL]

Re: [WIP] [BOAT] Single Seat F2 Race catamaran
Cos Im using a race speedmaster gear case its always in drive and there isnt a reverse. I could, with this setup, command the motor to spin backwards but Im paranoid about the gearcase not enjoying the experience.
the biggest problem with spinning the motor the wrong way would actually be the rubber water pump impellor. they are loaded into the pump housing with a twist in the direction of rotation and Im pretty sure it wouldnt take to kindly to being run in reverse...
