The plan/brainstorming. 2013 conversion/s

Post by Burning Oil »

Ive got a 2013 Leaf that I bought to use as a donor for a conversion on another car. The Leaf a very nice car so I hate to gut it for the parts. Its a good daily driver with about 55 mile range.
This is were Im trying to come up with a plan, so I have a second Leaf (charcoal color) should I take cells from it to make the first one (white one) more attractive with more range to trade? or leave as is? Im thinking I could trade the white one for a wrecked 2018-2019 salvaged Leaf 62 kWh?
Next question is, can the 2013 inverter power the 2018-19 motor? I think they are both EM57 right? Seems like it would? This way I would get the parts I need (and possibly still have to buy a GenII inverter) (BTW I have the openinverter board on the way from Germany) for the conversion and Id get a 62kWh battery to put in the charcoal Leaf. In the end Id still have to buy batteries for the conversion car.
The other guy would get a perfectly good running Clean Title/non salvage 2013 Leaf S.

Hope that made since. What do you think? good trade or not?

Pic's for interest. Its the car getting electrified.

From my understanding 2018 is the change year to gen3. I could be mistaken. Motors are the same. Em57, coolent ports have minor changes it looks like. the inverters are different. currently a thread on grafting a openinverter board to a gen3 inverter. The igbt stack is (on paper) more capable

Sorry, no idea about the batteries but love the look of the car.

Yeah Im wondering if gen II inverter will physically bolt to Gen3 motor and bus bars...etc line up. If the new inverter board can work in gen3 then Id just use that inverter.

If anyone stumbles on or has a wrecked 2018-20 Leaf they want to trade let me know.

Car is a Factory Five GTM.

What would be the effect of the Leaf gear reduction spinning taller wheels/tires than stock. Wonder if I should use the transaxle thats in the car now. It would be simpler to just run the Leaf gear though.

I never heard of Factory Five before but that is a real beauty, it's got to be one of the nicest cars I've ever seen.
I hate to say it but it's crying out for a Tesla drive unit so it goes as well as it looks.

Would love to Teslaify it but they cost to much. This is my first EV conversion also so trying to do it inexpensively to get though the learning curve.
