Since some months the phpBB extension for this got updated. It is now named Recent Topics NG and you can find it in here https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... ttopicsng/
This is a picture from the project developer how the extension can look like when enabled:

I just use the "new posts" button which keeps me up to date on everything since I last visited.

I also use the new posts button but it doesn't show up in threads sometimes.
The new posts on top of the board index is kind of nice.

I am loving it. Thanks! Now i can for example just load this link https://openinverter.org/forum , realize in about 5 seconds if there is a new answer to a topic i am maybe awaiting some answer and close it again! Or i can use it like the news ticker or the 'Today's featured' part of https://en.wikipedia.org
I by the way want to say in general thanks. There are many different points that seem to be done the correct way on this forum. One of the most important is to handle every new registered user with respect and value. The words a new user write here seems to be handled the same like when some well known user would write the same thing. It looks like what have been written is the important thing. Not who have it written. This is great!
Handling things this way is extremely important but sadly done wrong in nearly all other forum.

Honestly? I dislike it. It makes the forum more cluttered in my view. But if others want it, I'm not upset about it.
(once again, my thanks to you, Johannes, for how this forum is built out and operated)

Re: Add the phpBB extension Recent Topics NG
I just realized recent topics isn't the full list of new posts, I was missing things. It makes sense to not repeat everything but it's kind of this is what's new.
I think a consistent new posts button would be my preference.
