EV Lemons Racing at Thunderhill Livestream

Post by EVSwap »

Follow along with Team Arcblast for the next 25 hours and 1 minute of racing with our EV converted Datsun pickup at Thunderhill Raceway.

The racecar is powered by custom batteries that we swap out during pit stops. Hyper9 watercooled electric motor, Orion BMS and Jaguar I-Pace battery modules with approximately 32kwh which lasts about an hour at race speed.

Hoping to set a new EV Lap Record of 1000 miles during this race!

We're in place 45 overall, 8th in class! So far the battery chargers have been keeping up even with throwing the breakers multiple times per hour. Been running 10 hours straight so far going into the night shift.

The stream has been touch and go. Unfortunately due to poor cell service here, half the track is out of service. We will improve! Potentially using Starlink in the future.

We are still racing! 9 hours left. Things are going pretty dang good, holding down 9th in class and avoiding contact.

Very cool. Do you have a build thread for this?
I'm really interested in the quick swap battery / safety inspection details if you're willing to share. And no rush, I understand how these long weekends are.

Yeah I will put together some info this coming week after the race. Stay tuned. Tyler and Nick who started Team Arcblast spent a lot of time with Lemons officials over the past 3-4 years collaborating on the EV safety rules to satisfy them.

Up to 7th in class and setting a new EV Lap Record every lap. We set the record last year at 711 miles, just now we have done 939 miles. Looks like we'll be able to break 1000 miles easily.

You can check out my video from our race last year which shows some battery swap pit stops and some more details on the car, as well as in-car action:

Between this, Zieg's car, and a few others I think it's time to consider a racing and off-road section.

We just passed 1041 miles! Still holding onto 7th in class, 38 overall. Hour and fifteen minutes left in the race. We are on track to finish. About an hour ago we lost one battery due to the contractor welding closed so we're down to 2 batteries but should still make it to the checkered.

We ended up setting the new EV distance record at 1094.5 miles! Really stoked for that. We also finished 7th in class which is amazing for us considering we effectively have only 60hp when we're trying to drive efficiently.

We made a ton of aero mods to the car from the front splitter, flat bottom undertray, rear diffuser and tonneau cover and they all seemed to have worked in lowering our aerodynamic drag but we will have to look at the data to know for sure. I don't mind bragging but by "we" I mean I basically designed and built all that stuff singlehandedly based on my extensive YouTube watching experience 😂 bonus points for nothing falling off!

I'm not sure where it would fit best. Maybe things like this just belong in general/projects.
My thought was a section for offroad / racing would help people find things on the forum easier. Maybe this belongs in EV Topics? Not sure.

There are some conversions that would be easier to find / group with the right sections like racing, tractors, boats, etc. I think an offroad section after OEM conversions with these sub classifications. Please feel free to ignore this idea or anyone correct it with better ideas.

Why did you need 32 minutes in lap 370, it seems to take about 10 minutes normally to change the battery?

That was due to the contractor failure in one of our packs. We decided to pull in and let the next battery charge up more so that we could be on track for the checkered flag. We calculated that 30 minutes wait wouldn't affect our overall position due to the other cars being more than 40 minutes behind us, we ended up being correct and maintained our position until the end.

I dont know what’s possible with the site, but I think a metadata tag would work well. Similar to Project Status (WIP / Driving etc). But would be for the categories you suggest eg boats, tractors, racing. That way, you can have entries as today under Projects, or any other section if necessary, but then ideally you could search all tag = Tractor to get a list of results wherever they are.

What if you race your electric tractor though… :)
