I just bought a 6th Gen Toyota Camry Hybrid Inverter - Now What

Post by Gregski »

many of you know that the 6th Gen (2007-11) Toyota Camry Hybrid is the step mother of the 3rd Gen (2007-11) Lexus GS450h, a more established model line with cheaper and more readily available parts, and that's why I bought it

more specifically I bought it for two reasons:
  1. To see if the Camry inverter plug is compatible with the GS450h inverter
  2. To see if the Camry inverter using the EVBM.com Zombie VCU can control the GS450h inverter
so please join me on this quest

PART NUMBERS

Inverter Part Numbers (all these Part Numbers fit all 5 years (2007-11)
G9200-33010
G9200-33020
G9200-33050
G9200-33100
G9200-33101

RESOURCES

LESSONS LEARNED
  • the Toyota Camry Hybrid inverter plug does plug in to the Lexus GS450h inverter, however the pin out is different, but can be repined
  • the Toyota Camry Hybrid thick orange HV cables do bolt in to the Lexus GS450h inverter, however the transmission ends are different
  • the 6th Gen and the following 7th Gen (2012-17) Camry inverters are different and I would suggest you do not cross pollinate, and use the newer 7th Gen Camry inverters with the newer 4th Gen (2013-17) Lexus GS450h inverters (crappy write ups and videos on that coming soon)

INVERTER PLUGS FOR SALE

Since I live 2.5 miles away from the world's largest you pull it wrecking yard (and can hit 3 more wrecking yards in one day) I will be foolish enough to go pulling wire harnesses for you and pass them on to you as proud card carrying members of OpenInverter.org at cost. I will offer them for sale, you pay the shipping world wide, at different price points, with the ultimate pipe dream of building full on complete(ish) plug and pray wire harness kits based on the ZombieVerter VCU. Who ever provides the bestest most cleverist name for one of thse penultimate kits will receive a complete harness kit for FREE including shipping. (I may be a lot of things, but a business man aint one of them, don't you dare accuse me of being one!) Please PM me for details instead of polluting and cluttering up this handsome and super informative thread.
  • Stubby Bob - $10 plus shipping
    • what you see is what you get, just the plug with all its short wires sticking out, too short to run as is, you repin it
    • cost me $3 bucks to get into the yard plus $6 and some change
  • Shorty - $TBD plus shipping
    • what you see is what you get, the plug with 2 feet of wire, good for a bench test setup or short distance run in the car, you repin it
    • cost me $3 bucks to get into the yard plus $TBD and some change
  • Home Run - $TBD plus shipping
    • as long as you can get it, the plug with full length of wire, 5' maybe, good to run in the car, you repin it
    • cost me $3 bucks to get into the yard plus $TBD and some change

FYI - I still bought it just to see what they would charge me for it. It ended up being $6.00 bucks and some change, but you have to pay $3.00 admission fee to get in to pull your own parts. I will be happy to pass these connectors/harnesses to you at my cost plus shipping, PM me to make arrangements.

We drive a 2008 Camry Hybrid as our daily, so let me know if you need any measurements or data captures in vivo.

thank you so much, let's start with something on everyone's mind, how much does your car weigh, can you get it weighed for us please?

The gross weight rating on the plate is 2111 kg. I looked for the dry weight in the factory service manual, but I didn't see it. The internet thinks it's about 1670 kg. If you want a weight for our specific car I can do that, but I would have to remove our junk to get a useful number...

appreciate that and if it means forcing you to clean your rig then yes please weigh it, as I have seen differences of up to 300 lbs on what some nerd wrote in the manual and what the vehicle actually weighs especially with our pickup trucks here in the states, and remember, you are doing this for Science, ha ha

With a full tank of fuel and no-one inside, the truck stop scale reports 1642 kg total (914 front, 698 rear). We have the stock alloy wheels and the CD-changer radio without navigation. (Some apparently had steel wheels.)

I'm curious what the need is for the exact weight?

thank you so much, it is mostly for funsies, although haters always argue that not only did I ruin my 1971 Chevy truck by converting it to electric using one of these transmissions but that it also now is heavier than before because of all the batteirs blah blah blah typical ignorant propaganda

and then there's fact, though I never weight my truck prior to deICEing it I did weigh every single component as I removed it, and the specs state the truck weighed around 3,900 pounds and post EV conversion now weighs 3,160 lbs granted I am about to add another 200 lbs when I complete my battery pack upgrade to 24 kWh

so although the Camry plug fits perfectly into the Lexus inverter the wires are pinned differently, let's start out by comparing just the four Synchronous Serial black cables with two wire pairs each (a black and a white wire)

alright let's move them over one pair at a time so the 500KHz Clock line aka CLK wires first

CLK- white wire
CLK+ black wire
CLK this is a ground wire for the cable wire shielding mesh thingie, these wires are erronously cut too short at the junkyards by unknowing personnel

please consult Toyota Inverter Connectors and Pinouts for the proper pinout technique

alright let's move them over one pair at a time so the the data frame from the hybrid controller to the inverter HTM wires next

HTM- white wire
HTM+ black wire

alright let's move them over one pair at a time so the request line from the hybrid controller to the inverter REQ wires last

REQ- white wire

How I pulled a full length 6th Generation (2007-11) Toyota Camry inverter plug and synchronous cables wire harness (full home run from inverter to the Hybrid Vehicle ECU)

TOOLS
  • a pair of very sharp dykes aka wire snips
  • a very sharp box cutter (to cut electrical tape length wise with the wire harness grain)
  • 10mm deep socket (to remove fuse block from inner fender)
  • 100mm open end wrench (to remove brake line fittings to free up wire harness)
  • a flat screw driver
  • another pair of very sharp dykes aka wire snips, lol
IMG_0722.JPG

Top Tip: find a vehicle at the junkyard with it's engine and transaxle already removed (hopefully with a grenade like so)
IMG_0720.JPG

When standing facing the vehicle the inverter lives in the South East quadrant of the engine compartment aka the front corner just behind the headlight on the US driver side.
IMG_0724.JPG

It is wise to first check if the inverter plug is:
  • Present
  • Uncut
IMG_0726.JPG

the inverter plug harness traverses behind the bulky black plastic fuse box housing (held to the driver side inner fender with 3 bolts) before re emerging in the corner below the Medusa like master brake cylinder
IMG_0728 arrows.jpg
IMG_0736.JPG

it then makes it's way all the way across the firewall from the US driver side to the furthest North West corner of the firewall
IMG_0730 arrows.jpg
IMG_0738.JPG

where it plugs in to the Hybrid Vehicle ECU)
IMG_0732.JPG

There is no need to keep this large black rectangular plug with that gray lift handle that goes into this Hybrid Vehicle ECU, what you are really after is the four black synchronous cables, comprised of two wires each, a thin black wire and and a thin white wire, so just snip them here, they will later plug right in to the ZombieVerter VCU
