Chevy 2ML70 (Tahoe Hybrid) Conversion Help

Chevy 2ML70 (Tahoe Hybrid) Conversion Help

I was able to purchase a 2ML70 transmission and Inverter for about $250 with the wire harness. I would like to use it in an EV conversion without an ICE. It has a pair of HVH250 motors in it. The inveter contains two motor controler modules (MCMs) and a Hybird Powertrain Cotrol Module. (HPCM). The HPCM communicates with the MCMs via SPI and GMLAN.

I plan to get as much original equipment as necessary to simulate driving commands. Sniff all the bus comms. Then, I can override the inputs and sniff the HPCM to MCM interface. I suspect that I won't use the HPCM. Understanding its interface is just a means to understanding the HPCM to MCM interface.

Is there a better way to go about this? ...

* Is there some better way to figure out the interfaces?
* Should I use a different inverter ... one that's better understood? Do you have a recommendation?
* Should I focus on the HPCM or the MCM?
* Would you open the inverter first and see what your working with?

I apreciate any help I can get! I'm concerned that without an actual running verhicle this might be nearly impossible.

You could start out with a Prius inverter that also has two inverters. Might limit you on power but it is cheap enough to get you started. Search our wiki for Prius to see your options.

The other route is to replace the inverter logic of your existing inverter.

And finally the full reverse engineering

There could be a way to simply use drivetrain as a finite element.
Get a hold on to Chevy Volt inverter and replace its brain with Lebowski to drive any BLDC motor with RLS position sensor or Openinverter brain to drive motors using native resolvers...
I still have schematics on github...
I dont know about Tahoe inverter...

I've been planning on working on this transmission and inverter for a while now. I've collected some good information that's on a different computer - I'll try to share later today.

My tentative plans had been either Prius or Volt inverter to begin with (as suggested by Johannes and Arber above), and then maybe work on the stock inverter. My guess is the stock inverter is closely related to the Volt, but no data on that.

My family had a Yukon hybrid with one of these transmissions when I was a teenager, so it's something I've always been interested in.

Alright so first up, a few technical articles on the transmission

A three part series by Transmission Digest

Part 2https://www.transmissiondigest.com/gms- ... on-part-2/
Part 3https://www.transmissiondigest.com/gms- ... nsmission/

An introduction from Vehicle Service Pros

And attached another introductory article, unclear source, possibly simply "GEARS"

Next up, where can you find the 2ML70?

Found in:
2008-2013 Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
2008-2013 GMC Yukon Hybrid
2009-2013 Cadillac Escalade Hybrid
2009-2013 Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid (aka GMT900)
2009-2013 GMC Sierra Hybrid (aka GMT900)
2009 Dodge Durango Hybrid
2009 Chrysler Aspen Hybrid
2010-2011 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid
2010-2011 Mercedes ML 450 hybrid

From the articles in my prior response, it appears that at least the Cadillac Escalade version may have a slightly different internal mode switch, for some reason.

I also have all the wiring diagrams from the service manual, but need to clean those up before posting somewhere. Likely will end up creating a github folder for it.
