19-21 SDU

Post by gigawatts »

Has anyone used the small rear drive unit from a 2019-21 Model S or X? These are from the Long Range Raven package and they look identical to pre-Raven, 2018 and older rear SDUs except with an external oil filter and pump. There are multiple sources online stating that these are AC Induction motors. Will it work with the openinverter board or has anyone ran one outside of a Tesla?

"As a part of the Raven powertrain upgrade, the Model S and the Model X now have two different kinds of electric motors: a PMSR Motor in the front, and an AC Induction Motor in the back".

I haven't seen any development of Raven and later Model S components. My understanding is that some of them are just Model 3 components, but some are different.

I'm interested in them, but it's going to take someone buying a couple and tearing them down to figure out what is what.

It's really unhelpful that Tesla moved away from clear model designations, so it's difficult to figure out what units are in/from what cars.
If at first you don't succeed, buy a bigger hammer.

Yes! I'm happy to report that these units work great with Openinverter SDU boards. The external oil pump uses a separate 12V harness and runs independently from the inverter. Ready-to-run units are now available on our website (link in signature).
