Re: 1984 Voltswagen Rabbit Prius Gen 3 ZOMBIE
Hi Gregski,
For my project I was figuring out which batteries would be suitable. Initially I didn't give the BMW batteries much attention since they seemed to be cooled by direct refrigerant cooling. Later on I found out (this post and your YouTube video's -> very helpful, thanks!!) that you use/going to use them without cooling.
What are your idea's on thermal management at this point? Do you limit the current in and out of the batteries to avoid overheating? As an alternative to refrigerant cooling I was thinking about using heat pipes to cool the batteries, but that is only a rough idea.
Thanks!

Looks like a good option; I'll keep an eye out for them. If I had to guess, it's probably a variant of the same pump they sell to VAG/Porsche.
If at first you don't succeed, buy a bigger hammer.

Thank you for the kind words, yeah these batteries are amazeballs and I thank our friend Artur and his Jaguar XJR for turning me on to them! Well I highly doubt Netherlands gets hotter than Northern California where I drive my truck, and I use nothing but air to cool mine, going on second year / summer of driving (just over 1,600 miles on the clock so far). I do not have mine in a box though cause my truck is a fairweather vehicle so maybe that helps keep 'em cool(er). Conversely Artur lives on the opposite end of the country and has put the Jag and these BMW batteries through the test of their winters, also no heat or coolant running through them. Hope this helps.
Top Tip: Hold out for the second gen (SP41) battery packs which BMW introduced in July of 2019 as they are of larger capacity.

thank you, I really feel more comfortable now knowing what each and every fuse does (now if I could only remember what they do six months from now)

Re: 1984 Voltswagen Rabbit Prius Gen 3 ZOMBIE
alright, everything is done, connected, etc. Now What? Well let's go through the start up sequence sorta speak, for safety purposes the high voltage pack is still disconnected (just one of the leads to the Safety Box, negative in my case I think), so first we just see what the laptop can see with the VCU just getting permanent power

Super excited for this. When doing road testing please do current limit for 5kw and 10kw output to see if one can get usable power out of a small battery pack

Everyone: So Greg when are you gonna drive this thing?
Me: well when the floor of my garage drops below napalm so I can crawl under it and secure the high voltage lines with some quality Cardboard Freight zip ties
I don't think I ever saw 100 effs until sunset before

I'm uncomfortable celebrating by the inches here. What is this, a celebration for ants? We are being trained to underwhelm ourselves.
Let's get this sumbitch rollin' so we celebrate the success all at once!

*rolls 1 carlength forward at 2mph*

I guess the visitors to Good Enuff Garage will take what we can get.
She's a'rollin', and not just downhill. That counts. And she's like, fused up, VCU'd up, safetyboxed, has seats in her, a foward/reverse switch that doesn't involve undoing marettes. Soon she'll be registered, insured, and driving down the highway on top of a rollback.
Happy Fireworks Day

she's already registered and insured, all we need to do is persuade her to charge, the Zombie thinks we're charging but there's no amps going into the pack, I suspect the Control Pilot signal

Re: [FIRST DRIVE] 1984 Voltswagen Rabbit Prius Gen 3 ZOMBIE
thank you all for trying to help, please know I am not being defiant, I am going to the garage as often as the heat will allow it
last night I realized that despite of what Nigel says, some things are not better at 11, so chargerized the brand new expensive regular "12 volt" car battery to 13

Ooof and I was complaining about the upper 90s here in NC! (though to be fair its also upper 90%s for humidity here)
I call it Horrible Freight, but same difference

When you have time would you please consider doing a guide on the Outlander charger?
