Formula E Berlin

Actually this post comes a little late as the event is already over

On last years e-cannonball we won tickets to Formula E in Berlin.




I was super amazed when I learned that they complete 41 laps at full race speed with just 40 kWh. I then thought one lap was just 1 km as it seemed quite short but it was 2.3 km or 96 km total! (https://www.fiaformulae.com/de/calendar/berlin)

So under race speed they just consume 400 Wh/km! (equivalent to 5l/100 km or 47 mpg on petrol) How is that even possible? Well it turns out while they "just" output 350 kW from the rear tires when accelerating (the cars are 850 kg, go figure) they use another machine on the front axle to regen at 600 kW. Wow. Not sure how much friction braking is still involved there.

Overall an amazing weekend and great company. I met Mustang Mathieu there and we will meet again in two weeks to fix my battery cooling and his CCS.

Very cool! I think I saw in a driver interview that the friction brakes are not used at all in this current generation vehicle - they are just there as a backup in case of a fault or other emergency.

Looks kike they are used a bit during qualifying and the first lap when the battery is at 100%, and that's it.

I hope to go next year. Too much going on this year. They have a contract for another 6 years of racing there I think!
