BMS questions

Post by pxxmo »

Hey, guys. I intend to use a 77 kwh Hyundai Kia battery in my vehicle, but in the architecture of 400 V, 96s4p. as you know, you will need BMS. What would you recommend to be the easiest? Nissan leaf, if so, which version, simpBms, or something else?

split pack or all in one place?
Don't go for a single BMS in a split pack, extending sensing wires is error prone.

How good are you with code?
Johannes BMS is coming along slowly and needs code contributions/a real world test.

What comes with the Kia? If they have slaves already it might be worth integrating them with a custom master module.

If you are in one box and the Kia module speaks CAN you could investigate figuring out its packets and interfacing with it directly.

If you want more plug & play you could look at proprietary solutions like LithiumBalance, ThunderStruck and Orion.

If you don't need fast balancing you could use Tesla model S BMS slave boards together with SimpBMS. This would make a fully customisable stand alone BMS solution and what's best about it is that you would be very flexible on how many cells in series you can monitor. You could add or remove every 6 cells so you could monitor 90s, 96s, 102s, 108s and so on. I've got those Tesla BMS slaves + Teensy 3.2 for sale, PM if interested.
