60kW Fast Charger

Post by dougyip »

Over the weekend, we tested a new charger setup using a parallel pair of 30kW Charger Modules from China. Input was 3 phase, 440 V from a diesel generator. The charger performed flawlessly at the fully rated 60kw with no errors or problems. Control is via documented CAN bus commands, so this would be a good DIY solution for those that have 3 phase power (> 275V) and need an offboard charger. Price of each module was $1000 USD plus $300 for DHL courier to Canada.

We were very concerned about reports of poor Chinese quality, support etc so we did careful research of the manufacturer and Alibaba supplier. Our fears were unfounded. We were put in direct contact with a factory support engineer by the supplier and received prompt answers to all our questions. If anybody wants details details of the supplier, they can PM me.

No pics! I was tempted out of curiosity, but decided against it after everything worked.

What kind of connection plug did you use. And how is the charging managed? You use orionbms in this build correct?

We used a Tesla charge receptacle on the car and a Supercharger Plug on the charger side. Ultimately, the charge will be managed by our datalogger/controller. The Orion BMS will act as a supervisory safety which will cut the charge in case our datalogger/controller mis-behaves. For the weekend, we used a laptop running SavvyCAN to generate the CAN bus commands and a crew member standing by at all times.

Hello Doug, I tried to PM you for details but you seem absent for a while. Could anybody else provide information about affordable but reliable, canbus controlled, HV charger suppliers in the 500VDC 30kW and up range?

Sorry "addvalue", I do check in on the board, but I haven't actually signed in for a while so have not seen your PM messages. The supplier we used was:
Shenzhen Kaiyuan New Energy Technology Co.,Ltd. 40kW modules are also available now.

Thanks dougyip, those are very interesting modules to say the least. Are these can-bus or rs485 controlled with known protocol? Any datasheets or technical documentation you could share?

Communication is via CANbus. I've attached a datasheet and the CAN protocol. We regularly run these modules at the full 30kW for a full hour with no temperature issues at all.

That is one impressive beast. I was looking into Huawai R100030G1 as well, pretty much the same specifications but hard to get the protocol information on. Looking back, are you satisfied with the after sales if you ever needed any at all? Would you put any additional value on a known brand such as Huawai? Anyway, thank you for sharing. And let us us know how the Tesla Cobra EV is doing someday, that'd be interesting too.

Edit: link to a R100030G1, so similar you can't help thinking who copied who. Link is not the factory, just an example: https://m.alibaba.com/product/160055590 ... -30KW.html

Edit2: Could it be you meant this unit, the NXR100030 instead of the UR100030-SW in your link, scrolling past the first pictures these seem to be different models/brand and pricing: https://m.alibaba.com/product/1600226750225/detail.html

Edit3: And then there is this, R100040G2, 40kW from 300V to 1000V in a single unit: https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/e ... 1100269561

Is there something wrong with this charger offerings? They are still over 1000$ but seem to be sort of ready for end-users:
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 61487.html
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 35885.html
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 78076.html

The last one looks too good for the price. Is this really a offer for a 60kWh lifepo4 48V battery combined with 50kW chademo charger for 1430$ and lowest order-quantity of 2?

All but the lowest performance ones look too good to be true. You always need to contact the seller. Happens a lot that price and/or pictures are just examples and large volume prices exclusive all cost and keep an eye out for shipping cost to be per item, not per transaction, and sometimes deliberately higher than then the goods themselves. All pretty standard so just write them and DYOR.
