Performance hybrid rx8

Post by slociviccoupe »

Hello all. New to the group or forum but been lurking for years.

Project is a performance hybrid rx8. Engine is a 3.2l v6 vtec from an acura tl, getting the honda accord hybrid ima motor bolted between the engine and transmission. Transmission is a bmw/getrax gs7d36sg 7 speed dual clutch transmission. Rear differential will be aluminum super 8.8 from an auto 2015 mustang with 3.15 ratio to suit the transmissions short gear ratios.
Engine will be supercharged and looking at 450-500 hp from the engine alone. Hoping to integrate driving the inverter from the stand alone ecu via can bus, analog or digital output to the inverter.

The honda accord hybrid v6 ima was chosen because the rotor bolts directly to the crankshaft of my 3.2l v6. The resolver bolts to an interchangable cover plate on the bellhousing side of the block that also holds the rear main seal. So resolver phasing to the stator will remain the same as honda designed.
The stock accord and most other older ima systems were 144vdc. The ima motor at that voltage makes documented 16kw and little over 100 ft pounds of torque. Around 20kw has been had from the smaller g1 insight from a voltage increase to 250vdc and more current. Upwards of 30kw in short bursts. Hoping the larger diameter accord ima motor responds the same to the increase in voltage and current. I do plan on water cooling in my adapter plate and temp sensors in the stator that are non existant in the stock ima.

Currently i have the prius prime battery in mind either 96s for 350vdc or 4 out of 5 modules for 77s or 269vdc. I have a gen 3 prius inverter. I am between the gen 3 dual motor board or (2) mini mainboards. I would like to use mg2 igbt to run the honda ima motor and possibly use mg1 igbt to run a prius gen 2 ac compressor sensorless but use the phase current sensors for foc. So need to run mg1 and mg2 seperately and independently. If this cant be done ill have to explore other options like gen 3 compressor or another that has documented working can bus.
The prius gen 3 inveryer is way overkill as the ima motor cant handle what the prius inverter can put out hapilly. But there is more support and the dc dc Converter will work and not shut off with the higher battery voltages with the resistor change.

I could also use the accord hybrid igbt with a v3 or mini mainboatd as it has a dumb igbt that has the high and low phases triggered by 5vdc logic signals. The honda current sensors are also 5vdc and the ima rotor has s 6 wire resolver with 4 lobes on the rotors resolver rings. The reason for not using all of the accord hybrid ima system is because it is limited and plain put its a pain in the a$$. I do like the idea of using the accord inverter igbt as it is rated higher than the ima motor can handle.

No exciting pictures. Just a honda v6, a bmw trans and a prius gen 3 inverter so far. Still waiting on v6 ima unit to show up and the rest of the accord hybrid ima system.

The things i would like to accomplish is the hybrid ima motor start the engine. Push start buttom and motor spins to 1000rpm for set amount of tiime starting the gas engine. Eliminating the flywheel driven 12vdc starter .
Dc dc converter taking place of alternator running the 12v system and charging the 12v battery.
Electric ac compressor. Live in florida and have to have ac. The goal for no acessory belt or belt driven acessories. With the exception of the supercharger cog tooth belt and a belt driven crankcase vacuum pump .
Other goals are a custom instrument cluster with true tach with a needle and gauge face in the middle then digital gauges on each side showing traditional fuel level, temp, oil pressure, air fuel ratio, and boost. Then the other side showing assist, regen, soc with pack voltage.
Also hoping for levels of assist and regen to be switchable on the fly with multi position rotating switches that change how much or how less assist and regen can be had. Independently of eachother.

The end goal is to have a hybrid hot rod. Use the electric assist for the power and tq where the engine is lacking in lower rpms. Tryi g to come close to the new 2017+ acura nsx power wise and power delivery. In rwd instead of awd.

If i go with the lower cell count pack and the ima motor will handle more voltage i would also tu use the boost converter to boost battery voltage to mg2 igbt. If certain things like driving a gen 2 prius compressor with mg1 powerstage cant be done then the option of charging with mg1 and boost/buck might be an option but i dont fully understand all of that currently. I will have to work out a charger and a bms. Ive searched but anyone hacked the prius prime battery charger and bms yet? It would be convenient to run the prime pack, charger, bms and prius inverter with just the honda ima motor.
