Options for controlling 28v ACIM forklift motor

Post by LRBen »

So I'm currently helping a friend with a farm machinery conversion to electric. Nothing too exciting, just a machine that spreads sawdust. It runs off two hydraulic pumps, one for moving and another for sawdust spreading.

We ended up with a 28v AC jungheinrich forklift hydraulic pump motor, that I was planning to control with a curtis 1232e controller. However I just can't connect to the controller in order to program it for the new parameters needed. I've sent of a few emails this weekend to some local forklift repair shops to see if I can use their programmer.

But in the meantime I am wondering what potential alternative options there are in the hybrid/EV component world. I would like to keep the motor ideally as we have already bought it and done some work on the coupler to the hydraulic pumps. It's pretty low voltage but relatively high amps, I think around 200 amps max.
I think the Prius gen 2 inverter would work but it's a bit big and overengineered for this application.
If I could start this project over I think I would be looking at the Honda IMA motor and controller setup, would take a bit of development but it would be a handy motor setup for small machinery applications.

Any ideas? Or does anyone happen to have an AC forklift controller kicking around from the old days they want to sell?

I have a 36v ACIM controller, but it's so closed source You'd have to reverse engineer it entirely.

Prius Gen 2 is probably still your cheapest option. How many ponies do you need to push?
