Re: Hyundai Kona won't start just turns on but will not go on drive.
The following is based on my experience with a 2021 kona, so may not be exactly the same on the 2024.
At the base of the front A pillar on both sides are large connector blocks with several connectors.
This is the point where the engine loom, main harness, and floor harness all connect together.
I ...

Re: Hyundai Kona won't start just turns on but will not go on drive.
A "Bus Off" fault means that the reporting module saw so many errors on the CAN bus that it disabled its own CAN transceiver. "IBU" is the Integrated Body Control module.
So, it sounds like you either have a break or a short circuit in the P-CAN bus wiring. It's more likely to be a broken or ...

Re: Hyundai Kona won't start just turns on but will not go on drive.
Do you have an OBD2 module or a scanner? That can help you discover which modules are offline. If you're lucky then you might be able to read fault codes to tell you what the modules think has gone wrong. (If very lucky, clear those fault codes and allow the car to run.)

That's massive, well done! Are you planning to actually install all the components like the IEB in the conversion, or are you still deciding about that part?

I've recently obtained a pump from a Volvo S40 and was able to find the OEM connectors (from Yasaki). Have added the OEM part numbers and a labelled connector photo to the wiki page.

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Thanks for sharing those logs, I'll add the UDS IDs to the table.
I've been playing with the Airbag module as I'd like to work out what's needed to clear the crash symbol on the dash. I might want to use the dash in my conversion, once I work out what that is.

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Great stuff, Pelland! I'm really impressed you got the vehicle to come up in that state.
I have been looking at ScanDoc for a while, but wanted to wait until I at least had something running before parting with lots of money.

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Thanks Pelland. FWIW, I have had good luck getting diagnostics using an OBDLink LX dongle and this Android app . I think the Kona modules only implement diagnostics using UDS over CAN, none of the older K-Line protocol stuff (and a lot of older/cheaper OBD scanner stuff only does K-Line I think as ...

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Looking through your connection list I see the note against the EPCU wake up signal. I wonder if this is associated with waking up the LDC to charge the 12V battery when the vehicle is turned off.

pin ?
According to the RHD wiring diagrams here , Charging sub-network CAN-H is OBD pin 9 (Pink) and CAN-L is OBD pin 10 (Violet). The same pink/violet colour scheme is used for multiple different CAN networks.
None of that matches the diagram you posted, though, so I'm not sure what to make of ...

Re: BYD/Dropbeats CCS controller module
(The one thing we don't have yet is a CAN log, I think the only way to get one would be to probe the "Charging sub-network" while DC fast charging...)
I'd forgotten this CAN sub-network is also routed to non-standard pins on the OBD2 port, so this could be done from inside the cabin and without ...

BYD/Dropbeats CCS controller module
I had the chance to examine the CCS DC fast charging controller module from a BYD Atto 3 today, and thought I'd share some findings. This module is similar to the Hyundai one , as in it talks CAN messages on one side and negotiates the CCS2 PLC data link on the other side.

Hi Steve, great progress! I didn't see your post until just now, but as it happens I was looking at the COMP_CAN logs yesterday (mostly for AC) and picked out what I think is the heater control message on ID 0x111:

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Part of the repair process for anything to do with the cooling is to initiate a "purge" to remove any air trapped in the system. Needs the expensive Hyundai service software to that though.
Ah, of course. Very cool to know how to do this without figuring out the correct diagnostic request (or ...

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
Great results, Pelland! I'll roll this into the DBC file soon, too. Maybe we should do a wiki page for these pumps?
What happens on a "purge", exactly?
If anyone knows why my thumbnails are sideways, but images is upright I'd like to know.
This is a guess, but images can have the rotation ...

Here's the pinout list for the external EPCU connector on the Kona. I think it's the same as the Ioniq, the internal photos look very similar as well:
Using the same numbering as your diagram - rows 1-4 and columns A-Q where P & Q are the fatter wires.

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
How similar do the EPCU of the Kona and of the Ioniq look like?
Very similar, if not 100% the same. Maybe the IGBTs are lower rated, and I guess firmware is probably tuned differently...?

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
That board has two PCAN connections and I thought there's a small chance that one might be VCU and one might be MCU and they could be communicating between each other via CAN (plausible if the original R&D was two modules and then they got combined in a revision). However I haven't tried to ...

Hi steve,
I have one of these heaters (the one used 2017-2022) and intend to use it in my project, but I haven't got up to this part yet. It's CAN controlled by the AC control module (FATC), there's a dedicated CAN bus named COMP-CAN that has FATC, the AC compressor, and the PTC heater on it.

Re: Hyundai Kona powertrain components (PCAN)
When I get a bit further on I might investigate the inverter to see if it's possible to interface between the VCU function and the MCU function.
Could be a simpler point to control, or not
It's a very good idea. I had the same thought, but didn't get too far with it - the VCU and the MCU are co ...
