Telsa SDU and VW Beetle question

Post by MoonUnit »

Hi, I am considering upgrading my Beetle from a Hyper 9 setup to direct drive using a Tesla SDU with a drop-in board.

My questions are, if anyone is running this setup:

What voltage range you are running it at, and

What battery physical configuration have you used (capacity, module choice, cooling etc.)?

I'm in the UK so no chassis-chopping allowed - batteries would have to fit in boxes in the frunk and behind the rear seat. If I do this upgrade, I intend to add DC charging and the position of the required header tank for cooling is a potential concern, hence the question around how you may have configured your batteries.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure how your questions answer your problem. You can run any battery with an SDU as long as the voltage is not above the upper limit you can google . 96s is save. Lower limit is basically not given by sdu but by charger and other components .

I am running 7 out of 8 bmw i3 modules with 94 ah with an idc to 350A limited sdu

Power output will be somewhat proportional to voltage. Ideally 350-400v. BMW phev packs, or really most hybrid packs are a good choice. They have the stiffness to handle the power of a Tesla drive unit. They generally have higher c rated cells, and will handle dc fast charging. And would be compact enough to fit in a beetle giving your 15-25kwh. And wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg
