Hi. Is any one here knowledgeable about Catl modules and have experience with them in terms of battery pack/design?

Post by Leafer24 »

In short:

I want to build a new bettery for my 24kWh 2013 Nissan Leaf. I have wright know 2 options to choose in terms od the modules:

One from a car named Maxus eDeliver, its a chinnese van. Maybe known differently in other regions of the world. It has a battery pack made od 24 catl modules, in 4s1p configuration. Has 22v nominal voltage per module and 140ah. Total cappacity of those 24 modules is 52.5 kWh. Nominal voltage per pack is 350V.

Second option: MG Zs Ev from 2019. Has a battery made of 18 modules where each modules has 22v nominał voltage and 114ah. Total cappacity 45kWh. Nominal voltage per pack is 350V.

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated

You would need to measure the size of the modules and do some math or even drawings on how the new modules will fit in the existing space. The smaller 4s modules provide you with more flexibility I imagine.

I've a rebuild pack coming from aiways (probably U5 model) dismantled pack (180Ah 4s1p catl modules) . I do not have any info about size of maxxus model. Maxxus has also LFP version AFAIK.
If you have info about these pack, please share or add that info in a wiki.

Why not swap in a newer, high kwh leaf battery?

I'm guessing its because you can get Chinese batteries for much cheaper than leaf modules. I bought a one year old 50kwh battery for €1.1k shipped. Leaf batteries are like €1.4k for the old and degraded 22kwh version.

To answer all of your questions in one short.
1. Size of both options in terms of modules is the same wich is 355mm x 115mm x 150mm according to the guy that has those modules for sale. So I assume the would fit very nicely in leafs battery case.
2. Why not buy modules from china? Simply because they are expencive taking into consideration Exchange currency rate beetwen currency in my country to dollar. Secondly in terms of where i live wich is Poland there is only one company for the whole country that makes custom batteries for Nissan Leaf and they charge 6.5k$ for a 38kWh battery made of Catl modules. Where I can buy for less than 2.5k $ 16 or 24 Catl modules for a used Ev like Maxus or MG ZS Ev form 2019-2020 and build myself a 45 or 52 kWh for less than 3k $. That's way I didn't go with those options mentioned above and choose to potencialy buy modules and build it myself

One more question that was asked. Modules from both cars have NMC chemistry. I've added some Pictures below:

Have you thought about the BMS? If you are using the original 24kWh BMS how will it deal with 50kWh of modules? Have you looked at the wiring for the 96 cell taps the Leaf BMS will expect?
Have a search in the forum for Leaf BMS discussions.

Hi ianlighting I was thinking about this and I actually have a solution for this or rather solutions. I recognize you from Mynissanleaf forum. If its not a poblem can we talk about it there? I took a part in this topic: https://mynissanleaf.com/threads/shenzh ... 56/page-16.
I lean more to this option now so if you have any experience and can help or give me any advice I would be very grateful :)

Early in my conversion I did consider new CATL modules, but in the end I got a complete 60kWh OEM Leaf battery with its BMS, so ditched the idea of new Chinese modules.

I haven’t done anything in the Leaf forum for about a year probably.

If you’ve got a proven Leaf compatible BMS solution it could be useful to share it here for others to learn about.
