2008 Corvette C6 Conversion

Post by eGrandpa »

I recently completed (of course, never really done) my Corvette conversion using a Tesla LDU with the openinverter board.

I'm uploading monthly to my YouTube channel -- https://youtube.com/@e-grandpa9778?si=lKo2O2nWbbQaJuvP -- to spread out my build process.

Now I understand how people feel who say "I can't get my head around the software part"

I can't get my head around the mechanical part. I wouldn't deem something like this even possible. And you just present it like "look it's done!" :)

Awesome! That looks really clean!

What batteries are you using?

Also, did the LDU work with the stock rear suspension? I had looked at various Corvette suspensions for my build and was concerned about it fitting. EDIT: I watched the video and answered my own question.

I'd love to see build photos if you have them!
If at first you don't succeed, buy a bigger hammer.

My education / background is mechanical & electrical so I like integration projects like conversions. It seems like all the conversions are older vehicles to eliminate the CANBUS issues with modern cars. I knew going into this project that there would be issues with the existing GMLAN system. I'm still working on a few tweaks, but for the most part I have it addressed. I will show it in my last video (probably Part 6 or 7) on how I did it. I essentially maintained the ECM after removing the powertrain. The ECM is the GMLAN network end point (the BCM is on the other end), I "faked" the critical signals so the BCM believed the engine / transmission / fuel system was still there.

I'm still fussing with the OpenInverter logic as well. It's minor. I don't like the tip-in delay from start if going slow -- seems to be about 10-20%. I have regen set comfortably for throttle off regen at brkmax -40. I have ocurlim set to 1400 to restrict over drawing current out of my DIY battery system (Part 4 video to be released later). I lowered boost to restrict my acceleration and therefore current. The car can be extremely fast. It exceeds my expectations for how I drive. I can't get over current tripping if I accelerate extremely fast even if I'm already going 60 kph. Again, I don't drive this way, but still want to get the bugs out. I believe if I raise fweak it may help??

Thanks. Track my posts in my YouTube channel for build detail. I'm spacing them out over the next few months (Introduction, Motor, Controller, Battery, Ancillary and Vehicle Integration). I learned a lot from YouTube and Open Inverter so I thought it would be good to "payback" to show how I did it.

ocurlim is just for power stage protection. idcmax limits battery draw and idcmin limits regen if needed. It's not very smooth the limit though...

OK. Good to know. I will update my idcmax parameter. If I want to limit it to 1400, do I set the value at 1400? Thx.

What happens when it reaches this level? Is it like a valve that restricts it beyond this value or does the relay kickout?

Interesting. There doesn't seem to be any impact when I change idcmax. I have it lowered at 500 and the motor still draws current easily in excess of 1400a. Any ideas? If it ever stops raining in norther Michigan, I will continue testing. I see that I can change iacmax. It is currently at 5000. Seems that it would not be necessary given my idcmax setting. But, will try a low number to see.

In retrospect, I would not have put individual cell fusible links as that limits my max current out of my tesla 18650 cells. I can easily control how much current I pull, but it's when someone else takes it for a ride. I want to limit it to approximately 15a/cell so about 800-1000a.
