64kwh Kona battery
Has anyone used the cells of a Kona battery? Can they be used like the leaf cells, if you put them in some housing for the necessary mechanical compression?

They are basicaly the same as chevy bolt batteries. They use a good low profile frame with copper contacts.

Awesome, so the measurements you gave me here are the ones of an array of cells? How many cells are in there? Whats the voltage of that array? Send like there is a block metal frame around it?

The length of the 10S3P and 15S2P modules is 480 mm (+15 mm mounting lugs), while the length of the 9S3P modules is 430 mm (+15 mm here as well). The modules are 105 mm high (+10 mm extra) and 360 mm wide.
There is a 39 kWh "Economy" version from Hyundai Kona Electric, which contains 180 cells in a 90S2P configuration, ie there are two of the above cells in parallel - its nominal voltage is 330V, its operating range is 225 ÷ 387V, while the "Standard" version is already Contains 294 cells in a 98S3P configuration, i.e., the cells are connected in parallel with a triple; its nominal voltage is 360V, its operating range is 245 ÷ 421.4V.

How is that possible, i thought they all would be the same? How do they make sure energy draw is the same for every cell if the arrays are different?

Thanks for this inside on the battery i just bought mine and I'll have to take it apart in order to split it in 2 packs, front and rear. Will you reuse the BMS? Is there already some knowledge about the canbus information?
Do you also have a picture of the cell connectors?
Is cell monitoring a master/slave design or do all 98 positive connectors go to three BMS directly?

The three types of battery modules have a total of eight (!) different connectors. Their illogical connection is a nightmare. The MAX17845 chip built into CMUs is top secret, with no datasheet, not a programming manual. And it uses an isoSPI bus anyway, not a CAN bus.

So if it's like that, how can you reuse the battery modules? Can i tap the cells with an aftermarket BMS?

My aim is to just work out the can messaging from main management unit from some can logs I have let to get, also hoping to make use of one other those ev apps that already have the can figured out

Good find. So it seems feasible to extend the existing cell tap harnesses to an Orion BMS or so. Of course it would be preferable to use the stock BMS if hacked by then.

MAX17843 is cracked by Bexander. I made an interface board for it successfully communicating with the latest Renault Zoe, Peugeot e-208 and Kia Niro PHEV. Let me know if you want one to try.
Quite possible that MAX17845 is similar enough to MAX17843 so it can be controlled with MAX17841B. A first step would be to see if the package and pinout is the same.

For the MAX17845, both the pinout and the basic protocol are the same as the MAX17823B, but the self-diagnostic is different.

The KONA Battery comes with some modules, slaves and master does anyone figured out yet what their connections are?

I have a kona pack open now and if possible I want to use the original bms system.

Send me an EMAIL or DM. But the module doesn't use original BMS system.
What we do is use original chip, LIKE OEM BMS and design own BMS around that.
One of the theories on this forum is that by using our own hardware and software we are independant of software changes in OEM hardware.

Hi, are you saying 39 kwh Kona battery is using same cells as the 64 kwh battery but 90s instead of 96s and in 2P configuration instead of 3P? I wonder if 6s2P block can be added to make it 96s? I'm wondering how would Nissan Leaf stack controlled by Zombieverter work with the 90S 39 kwh battery pack since it's voltage range seems to be ~230-380v. Anybody knows what's the min voltage Leaf gen3 inverter works to and if it loses power as the voltage gets lower as the pack gets depleted (Leaf inverter controlled by Zombieverter by CAN)? Thanks
