No TX and RX are dedicated serial port for the display.

OK, I have a problem that I cannot solve;

I am using original old SimpBMS hardware, the software version is from 11.03.2023

problem item: Module #8 (CAN module 4S+4Sdumb+2Sdumb total 10S)

I have 12S(module#6) and 10S(module#8) connected to SimpBMS. They have both worked fine standalone when tested before with old vw code supplied with the simpBMS years ago, but now the 10S shows up as 8S, but the problematic 2S module, that is not showing voltage, is transmitting the temperature via CAN bus.

Shown here with the 2S interconnect wire, temp shows when connected, the voltages are present on the CAN module circuit board too, but not showing on terminal for some reason. I tested other 10S module and other interconnect cable but still same behaviour.


could this be something changed in the code and the voltages for 2s modules are just ignored? the 4S modules work fine as you can see.

Are the missing 2S cell voltages possibly shown on the canbus debug capture below?

(Module #8 has total 10Cells connected, temp3 is from 2S module that shows no voltages.)

The 10S and 8S modules worked with old software that had different way of showing the "missing module voltage readings"

this 10S module is now showing also as 8S

So there is some more checks for plausible values being sent by modules, you log is showing 0x1CC, 0x1CD, 0x1CE as are expected for module 8 but all with 0xFF or 0xFE for cell voltages or translates to not correct cell voltages.

The modules messages are discarded if they are shown as 0xFF in any of the plausible voltage locations as those are not correct messages.

For some reason your module 8 is not happy.

Thanks for your very fast reply and help!

I will try to think what could cause this, maybe I make a new simpBMS to one VW module CAN cable and continue testing then with modules on the table. PS, when 8S is read to CANBUS, disconnecting only orange interconnect cable between BMS and first 4S module results in module missing text and no voltages are then present. but only disconnecting the interconnect from 2S module removes temp reading temp3 but no error appears.

The CAN module #8 is 10S and module #4 is 10S module also, so used the module #4 with 4S and 2S dumb modules for these logs, since module #8 is in the car and these were not currently installed. So could just bring them to kitchen table for debugging.

I think my previous log from module #8 had only FF FE everywhere, because I had taken log on wrong point in testing or something, after I didnt get it to work. so starting fresh:

Now we have a new cable and direct CAN bus from SimpBMS to e-golf gen2 samsung 10S CAN module #4,
with termination on both ends, total 60ohm between H and L. the interconnect wires are double checked and HV links are installed.

"Immediately" after connecting power to module, we have cell voltages.
I think the last 2S voltages are also on the can bus, but the simpbms filteres them for some reason??

My bad, I forget the fact that the E-Golf has 10S modules, let me tweak my code and upload for you to test. The filtering is to keep starting modules and messages for empty voltage from messing with things.

Just for background info, turns out all of the flavours of VW/VAG uses the same CAN bus format, yet they all do somethings slightly different. You can have modules with 8 up to 16 cells, so 2 to 4 CAN bus messages with voltage.

Never done alot with the Egolf so was focusing on filtering when adding compatibility for the MEB the 10s situation got overlooked.

A interesting question for you, ever heard of the VAG 13s module ;)

I think maybe this thread had it mentioned? Maybe I read about it being reason for the cell12? when I was browsing for solution to my problem before posting it. But I can't remember where it was used or anything.

BTW, opened up the 10S and 8S CAN Modules covers to measure voltages from board to rule out bad connectors, and even the 8S is physically equipped with 12 sets of resistors for balancing and they all look to me identical to 12S version, so I was even thinking I have accidentally somehow reset the module to send only 8S voltages :lol:

Hi, I tried my SimpBMS the first time :) I have Tesla B-Class satellite units. I believe I connected them correctly. I also tried different ways to connect the data connections. The Tesla unites were not connected to any batteries. I just wanted to see if the temp sensors work.

The SimpBMS was connected to two Tesla units, the display and via USB with the PC. But when reading the values no temperature was shown (and no voltage but that was expected). Does the BMS need another power connection or should it be possible to read the Temp sensor values from the Tesla B-Class units in this minimal setup?

Connect them to the batteries or they do not work. This has been said many times now, the BMS slaves are isolated and are powered off the cells on the logic side.

Hello Tom,

I know, that the old Teensy board is unreachable, and so the SimpBMS is out of stock everywhere. I saw the EVS-BMS product, but do I understand right, that the software of these modules are not opensource anymore? So if I buy one, I can not modify it, just through sneding request to you?

Is there any chance, to buy (any type) hardware, which is able to run my "modified" simpBMS code?

Are there any notes how to setup the IVT-S sensor with the SImpBMS?
I have it selected in the menu:

I have not used IVT-S with simpBMS but from looking at the code it uses big endian for current and voltage whereas Zombieverter and other OI solutions use little endian.

The IVTS setup is the factory default that is to be used with the SimpBMS, makes it easy on anyone buying one. No need to change any parameters.

Why did you change the programming of the IDs are there other devices that us it too? Did you not propperly achieve a reset?

Never understood why people changed the CAN configs. If you need it the code is Opensource and I am not making any updates or changes to it myself, forking it will be the only way to get changes. These can ofcourse be pushed back into the main branch when proven.

It turns out the Serial CAN library stopped working after an IDE update.

Now released one that remove Serial CAN functionality and it works again. I will consider the Serial CAN function which was limited to the Chevy Volt battery a dead function.

Update: turns out not to be the full fix, I do not have a chevy volt test setup so I recommend rolling back to a working .hex file, I made a branch for this purpose on github. https://github.com/Tom-evnut/AmperaBatt ... /VoltBMSV2

Massive thanks for sorting this out Tom! I was worried that my replacement Teensy was defective. But it's all working again now with the roll-back version.

It does indeed I believe modified version of the PHEV code will do it due to more modules available. However if it does not I can review can logs and make it work.

Out of curiosity where did you find one affordable?
