Possible to mount a gearbox on a gen 2 prius transaxle

Post by frondelius »

Is it possible to mount a gearbox to a gen 2 prius transaxle?
Is there any project that has done that?
Is there any numbers in on how many kw you can get out of a gen 2 transaxle with a gen 3 inverter runnit both motors at the same time?
Thanks.

I do not understand the need. The Prius Gen2 transaxle includes a gearbox of sorts, yes you can run both motors at the same time but doing so requires some hardware modification.

How many kW? A LOT, 2x at least I would say, Damien has done some testing, the more relevant question is for how long.

The need for a gearbox mounted on the transaxle would be a higher top speed maby?
And I think it would be easier to mount a gearbox to the transaxle then make new drive shafts.
It would also, maby, be possible to use a Prius transaxle with a rwd car.

Do someone know the top speed you can push the Prius transaxle to with example 14" wheel's?

I'm new to this and I'm very thankful for your knowledge and answers.
Thanks.

Prii already go about 100MPH/160KPH

There is no practical way to mount a gearbox, you would need TWO - one for each "side" between the transaxle and axle shaft.

The transaxle is certainly able to operate a RWD or FWD vehicle, as long as you drive the wheels directly. I seriously considered a Prius Gen2 transaxle for my Squareback project, but found an "MGR" for cheap and it has more than stock power & Tq, so why not.

The half shafts spin between 1500 and 1600rpm at max rpm for MG2 (depending on which generation/model of Toyota transaxle). If you want to only use 1 halfshaft as an output, you will have to weld up the differential (aka Lincoln Locker).
