Electric Brake Boosters

Post by jalovick »

Hi,

I've been researching electric brake boosters, preparing for my first conversion project. I've compiled my research on the Wiki on the EV Conversion parts page - https://openinverter.org/wiki/EV_Conver ... rts#Brakes

The main ones I've been looking are versions of the Bosch iBooster (https://www.bosch-mobility-solutions.co ... /ibooster/). Has anyone used these with their conversions?

Thanks

Please see the suggested boosters under ev hardware section.

If you find out other options please post here but please make a post under hardware that refers to your post here.

Now what i have seen from those brake boosters, btw i have one at home, i am convinced that for normal EV conversion we as in normal resources people do not want to mess with the emergency system such as is ABS and brakes. Those are usually standalone systems and either depend on their own power source or are supported by the engine. Replacing the brake booster with e-brake booster would in my opinion involve/require too much craftmanship and system knowledge to perform this safely. If we can replace the engine as vacuum generator by those vacuum pumps we are doing absolutely minimum required to keep the car save and comfortable to drive. Even the regulators have recognised the risk of using uncertified brake vacuum pumps. The first question with every EV conversion i was apart of was always what you use for brake booster.
They were satisfied if those pumps were made by Hella and they were previously a part of another car.

The real problem i see with using brake switch choice. I think we would need more variation of them.
I had a problem with Dracarys switch. It is easy to use, but it is terribly unreliable. It locks off at random. I found it is good to spray some WD40 into the switch before installation. But still when it goes dry membrane still sticks. I will try MIG welding spatter spray next...

Found in various Audi, VW and Volvo cars

Hella UP30
I found that in a Renault Megane car. I use this in my conversion and is quite powerfull.

I found here good assessment of known brake boosters.

Thanks for the thoughts on the iBoost brake hardware arber. I was looking at one of these as a solution to replace my hydraulic brake accumulator in the audi but thought better of it as i was unsure as to the redundancy from a safety point if view. I plan to stick with the well trodden path, since the beginning of vehicle manufacturing time, of the vac boost servo solution as well as using the vac pump and vac reservoir from the vast VAG portfolio. Lots of Coupe Quattro and S2 owners do this due to failure rate of the 'bomb' accumulator.

Thanks for the info. I guess it depends on which vehicle is being converted and who's doing the work to know which option would be the best choice. In regards to the vacuum pumps, it would be good to compile a list of manufacturer part numbers, so they're easy for people to find.

I had referenced the evcreate.nl site in my Wiki entry, and have chatted to the guy who runs the site, and we exchanged some info for the VAG parts.
