Model S charge port disassembly?

Post by RobCote »

I got this thing disassembled nearly completely (not shown), but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the "shroud" piece around the EVSE insertion point. What am I missing?? It's the outermost piece shown below in the top portion of the photo:

The only remaining fasteners I see are completely inaccessible with any sort of driver to remove them. I don't get it and I feel dumb. Help!?

https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads ... ins.84912/ Thanks google, shows other side apart so I would guess rest is behind PCB or plastic welded/glued.

Note you are missing key pins, Ground, Control, Proximity.

I would bet you need to do a whole lot of disassembly to get any deeper.

How are you planning on using the charge port as standard tesla charging comms (sw can) is not supported by anything im aware of.

Model 3 might be better if you want to shrink it down.

Appreciate you, Tom! Always quick with a reply. I got a bit further than what's shown in those photos, but not much. There's not much to the assembly, really. I'll take it apart again and post better pictures, so y'all can see what I'm up against. Give me a bit. I figured if it'd been done before, someone might just know and have a tip handy.

I have the CC/CP and ground wiring - I just removed it to tinker with the assembly and not have to deal with the wiring in my way. My intent was to use the charge port merely as a connector, essentially. I don't care to make the flap open or anything like that. And it's my understanding an OI-modified onboard charger will handle the communications with EVSE. Am I wrong about that and missing some key fundamentals? (HIGHLY LIKELY). If so, please point me in the direction of more information.

Possibly it would.

Tesla use its own communications and not the standard J1772 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SAE_J1772, the connector and communications is different. Luckily it is possible to have a Tesla AC EVSE talk J1772, or use an adapter to a normal type 1

For AC charging this is also true even more so for DC fast charging. I assume you are just looking to get AC charging?

Found what I seen a few hours ago on Diy Electric car. Certain model 3 charge port versions break down really nice.

No idea regarding the cable and pin retention ect on how far the poster broke down his port.

Yeah I noticed that in the video you linked. It comes apart much nicer. The Model S is piece is what I already have, so that's why I'm trying to work it. I can make it work, I just thought if I could break it down a bit further, it'd integrate a little bit nicer. Here's what it looks like stripped down:

Image

Here you can see a screw head through the window, but it's impossible to get a driver onto it. There's also at least one more screw inside there that's impossible to photograph and definitely cannot get a driver on:

Here you can see the shroud is clearly a separate piece:
