Radiator for battery/invertor cooling

Post by SteadyEddy »

Good morning.
Has anyone used a Vespa/Piaggio scooter radiator for battery and/or inverter cooling? They seem about the right size but thought I'd check if anyone else had experienced these before buying...
Cheers

I ran with fiat siecento radiator HELLA 8MK376718311 or VALEO 230309 for years now and i say motor and inverter are not a problem at speed. Charger on the other hand really heats up. Usually this is the reason you would need a fan/blower in the system.

Thanks - I've just looked - that radiator is nice and compact...

What charger are you using?

I think it's important to remember that although EV systems (inverter and motor) are more efficient than ICE the operating temp is much lower and therefore the temp delta also. So I would think twice before going too small. Obviously it depends on the power of the system you are running but it's something to bear in mind.

The charger is easy to calculate how much heat you need to dissipate.

I would recommend doing the calcs and see what you will need.

I have tested charger losses and it seems Eltek Valere 3kW charger from Volvo hybrid is the most efficient with 220W losses.
Outlander charger has a little more then 400W losses, but this could be because there is DCDC in the same casing and coolant would have to serve its function for both.
I never considered how much losses Tesla charger has... at least 600W in my opinion

I have noticed Eltek charger can run 3kW with Siechento radiator without fan, but not Outlander. dT is simply too high and coolant keps raising temp.
