Making sure I gather the correct parts...

Post by CasaDelGato »

The old motors in the truck I converted (95 For F250) have failed. So rather than paying a LOT of money to fix the old DC motors, I'm planning on trying to use a Leaf motor. (yeah, less max power, but should be usable.) With the old motors, the truck cruised at about 30kW at 55 mph.
I've picked up a 110KW motor from a 2020 Leaf S.

Brat industries can supply the mounting plate and shaft adapter I'll need.
My truck has an existing battery pack using an Orion BMS. (350v, 112kWh)

As far as I can tell, it should be possible to use a Zombieverter to control the motor, J1772 charging, and possibly CHAdeMO charging as well?
Is this correct?

Note: I've been doing software dev and micro controller work for over 30 years, so I'm not a complete newbie.

Yes the Zombie will work again with full stack after the coming update. The charging was broken in an older release.

Ok, now I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to buy.
It appears the Zombieverter is here: https://www.evbmw.com/index.php/evbmw-w ... zombie-vcu
There is mention on the main page of an enclosure kit w/connector w/wire harness, but I haven't been able to figure out where to get it.
I already have a pile of contactors, relays, etc...
While I've found mention that people have gotten it to work with an Orion BMS - I have yet to find clear instructions on HOW to do that.
And if I DO hook it to the Orion, do I need the canbus connected shunt that is mentioned?

There are links to Aliexpress for the zombie enclosure and connector/harness on the main wiki page:
https://openinverter.org/wiki/ZombieVerter_VCU

Lots of good info to watch and read there.

Regarding the shunt you will need one to utilize much of the functionality of zombie

Ok, finally figured out the enclosure links.
When I clicked on the items in "the Enclosure Kit links" My browser looked like it just scrolled the page down some, but didn't indicate that the target of the link was one of the references at the very bottom. (Probably would be good to have a description at each link.) I wasn't expecting the links to be listed separately - as the 3rd item in "the Enclosure Kit Links" has a visible link - which made me think the others were missing.

So, the canbus shunt is needed even if there is a BMS providing the current value?

You can edit the wiki yourself to make it clearer and more helpful. Use your forum details to log in.

Someone will be along to confirm but my understanding is it the ISA shunt is setup for almost plug and play (needs initialising but this is pretty easy). Other options require more work, but if they were spitting out information about the battery state etc. on the canbus it could be made to work but this is only battery state and only in the battery enclosure whereas the shunt has multiple options for reference points and as a result is much easier and more flexible to utilise.

The ISA shunt is required, it also measure the HV bus voltage for precharging functionality and not only current.
