Suitable Precharge resistor for GS450h inverter

Post by acollins22 »

Hi Folks,

I am still accumulating the parts for my '79 Scimitar/Lexus GS450h project.

I am now thinking of the precharge. I have seen various online calculators but they all want to know the internal capacitance of the load (inverter). As I am by no means the first to tread this path, please can someone suggest suitable values (resistance, wattage) for a GS450h inverter, fed with ~400v.

If you could also tell me the suspected current, I'll be able to choose a suitable relay too :-)

Thanks,

Andy.

Technically, I have no idea. I'm using the contactors and precharge resistor out of a 1st gen LEAF. Just bought the whole set up. All is working as expected.

Hi PatrcioEV,

Thanks for the reply. I've had a look on ebay here in the UK but couldn't find any Leaf contactors. Are they part of a specific module and if so, what's it called.

Thanks,

Andy.

hi,id love to know if your leaf contactors are able to hold with the gs450 setup, what is your maximum current? I used the same nissan leaf gen1 contactor but all result into permanent shut welding

I stuck a 40ohm unit from an Outlander PHEV on mine and monitored the current, it peaked at 17A and dropped to a few amps in just a few seconds, that seemed fine for me, so I went with that.

It's essentially an RC circuit, the capacitor value in the inverter is known, and the capacity of your inline fuse is known, so keep the peak current below that while still allowing the capacitor to charge quickly enough for it to not be inconvenient.

I have not had any issues with the contactors thus far. I think I pull maybe 550 amps peak.

What is your battery voltage and your precharge dc switch voltage settings?

What is your battery voltage and your precharge dc switch voltage settings? I also get this error (thottle12diff) on when throttle is pressed below half, could you be having a solution for this?

I am using the GS450h VCU, not the Zombiverter if that matters. My voltage is 252-344 empty to full (not truly 0 or 100%). I use an Arduino in my HVJB to run the contactors and just do it by time - negative and precharge close, pause, positve closes, pause, precharge opens.
