Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Hello everyone,
I finally have the legendary 1984 Jaguar XJ6 in the garage. Some may say it's crazy to convert this vehicle (and its incredible engine) to electric. And I won't argue, the engine is marvelous, but consuming almost 30 liters per 100 km makes it financially unviable. In any case, my idea is to use an electric transmission/motor/gearbox to convert it. Initially, the two options would be the gs450h or ls300h, although, and here comes the first doubt, I would like to have at least the same original conditions. We are talking about a vehicle with a 5.3-liter engine with 432 Nm, a monster of a vehicle, weighing 1930 kg. I understand that the 450 should be sufficient and do this job well. On the other hand, due to the RWD, a Tesla doesn't fit well. Here are the specifications of the donor vehicle:
https://www.ultimatespecs.com/car-specs ... gn-HE.html
So, the first question I need to resolve is 450 vs 300. As for the VCU, there's no doubt, Damian and his Zombiverter will do the job very well. Regarding the battery pack, and taking advantage of the lowered prices (Poland, Europe), I'll go for the maximum allowed by the weight, as I have no space issues. With the monster of an engine and the two gasoline tanks it has, I can probably reach 60 kWh or more. The rest of the components, and to stick to a low budget, will come from different sources, keeping an eye on previous conversions done here, especially Artur Kustusch's. This won't be my first conversion; I already converted a Mini R50 in 2020, but it was somewhat easier with a Nissan Leaf and the help of a mechanic. So, I look forward to your opinions... constructive ones and I'll be posting updates as I progress.
Ciao

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Grand scheme in my opinion.
Had been offered a V12 with thoughts to do this some 5years ago, and hesitated. for $10k The Lodge where I was posted, was then sold, the new owner liked the car, and it was included for a complimentary $1.
However still have XJ6 74 S2 with non standard engine that I fitted more decades ago than care to remember,
And considering it's future with GS450H.
So probably have a positive bias to project..
Am presently working on tests for GS300H to see how usable it is, based on what have found so far, I would recommend the Bigger GS450H for your Jaguar .

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
One guy near Frankfurt converted an Aston V12 by fitting an LDU into the rear subframe. Not sure how comparable the vehicles are and probably needless to say it *just* fitted
With a full P85 battery pack the car weighs less than before.
That said I reckon a GS450 will be more reliable and cheaper

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Yeah, one of the ideas is avoid modifications on the chassis so in case one day some crazy one want to comeback the V12.
About performance, the LDU or even SDU is more than enough for this car but will have to modify it. So then Gs450h will be, I was just doubting about the torque/power, but should be enough. Other point is the inverter, I will try to avoid the one from gs450h (G9201-30010) as per expensive one, and will use Camry inted.

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
A good question is whether investors after 2012 (GS450h Mk IV 2014) would be within the Zombieverter. Anyone?
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Looking forward to your progress... Not only is the V12 a "gas guzzler" they are like a top model girlfriend: great to look at and listen to but the maintenance!
Aye aye aye....
Aye aye aye....
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Assuming 300wh/km, that would still be maybe 10% of fuel side of running cost... So ROI, will look good.!
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Getting ready, I have bought the gearbox/motor, now will focus on inverter and there I have soooo many doubts. Will see if anyone will reply about which kind of inverter are under Zombiverter code for this engine. Happy Christmas !!!

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
That's a gs450h transmission right? You'll want a GS450h inverter to do with it. Pretty standard setup for RWD cars and Zombie will have no problems.

Not sure we have Camry inverters here in the UK, not sure where OP is from, but the plates and vehicles look outside of US, so may not have Camry inverters available. Note the GS450h seems to have have LHD and RHD variants, see wiki.

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Hi Bigpie, Yes it's a gs450h, I'm base in Poland. There are a lot of versions of inverters here but among all of them, the one for gs450h (G9200-30030) is the most expensive. I saw the videos of Artur, totally inspiring, I will follow his build. Just need to confirm if Camry or other inverters like gs450h version from 2014 or 15, will work.
Will keep posting next steps.

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
I believe someone on the forum has been testing the 2014/15 variant of the GS450H inverter with the older GS450H transmission and having some success. I previously had a Camry inverter running a GS450H transmission ok with the older GS450H VCU. The inverter was the same era as the transmission. So that should also work with the Zombieverter.
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Thnaks nkiernan, I will try to find the one used the new inverter, I saw a G9200-30080 with good price.
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
The inverter has arrived, now waiting for the Zombiverter and getting ready to start tinkering. I need to find the batteries; I was thinking about 40-50kWh, but it raises a question. I know the Gs450h can operate from 288V; initially, I was planning to go with 400V to make all components more compatible. However, here's the question: would increasing it to 600V allow me to develop more power? Is there a difference that justifies going from 400V to 600V, for example?

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
The increase in voltage does increase the power. But only by increasing the rpm at which the torque starts to drop off. So you wouldn't neccesarily see any increase in power low down. But you would notice it higher up the rev range.Tachopis wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 8:59 pm The inverter has arrived, now waiting for the Zombiverter and getting ready to start tinkering. Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Great for the response LRBen, therefore, it is the increase in RPM between 400v and 600v that I would notice. I have to assess whether this increase is worth the extra configuration and components.

Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Some real-world impression on 650V. You'll be fine with 400V as others have proven and can stick to more OEM parts like the on board charger etc.Tachopis wrote: ↑Sun Jan 07, 2024 8:59 pm The inverter has arrived, now waiting for the Zombiverter and getting ready to start tinkering. A motorcyclist is never late, Frodo Baggins. Nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he means to.

yeahhh, I saw that few days ago, it's amazing the job done in this car, hopefully I will go in this direction, still long way there.
Re: Jaguar XJ6 V12 will be electric!!!
Well well well, look what came yesterday. Now I'm waiting for the connectors to start the wiring. One question I have is if there is a possibility to use the DCDC converter that comes with the Lexus gs45h inverter. If not, I will have to look for an external OEM one. Thanks a million Damian!!! will keep you posted.

There's no built in DCDC for 12v within the GS450h inverter
