Wow Damien that is very scary! especialy because you don't know if it is a easy to extinguish fire or a lithium fire.. Thank god it was a small fire.
I know in the ebike batteries some brands use PPTC fuses on the cell connections for the bms wiring. but most of the time they make them so thin that the wire would act as a fuse. I had it one time in my workshop (i own a Ebike battery refurbish company) that a screw was driven thru the balance wire harness. There was a lot of sparks and red glowing but it took only 2 seconds before the wire where completely gone. No fire no heat build up in the pack. So maybe that could also be a solution. altough i don't like bms's too a german company called BMZ made a lot of packs in the past with
18650 SonyVC cells that only had temp, upper limit and lower limit voltage of the whole 10s pack. after 5 years and not much capacity left there was still no drift between cells, jus saying
