MEB Chargers
Hi,
I've been considering getting one of the MEB chargers, possibly out of an Audi e-tron (single AC input), Porsche Taycan (dual AC input) to use in a project. I've found a few variants across the range which start with the part number 5QE915684 (earlier ones like the e-Golf or e-Up! started with 5QE915681 and appeared to have two 3.6 kW chargers, making 7.2 across two phases, or 5QE915685 and 5QE915682 variants appear to be 3.6 kW single phase chargers), and wondered if anyone has played with any.
There are both 11 kW and 22 kW versions, but I haven't found much on the 22 kW versions yet. (EDIT: It looks like they combine 2 11 kW chargers to get 22 kW support)
Some part numbers are:
- 5QE915684J, 5QE915684AD, 5QE915684A - From Audi e-Tron, single AC input, coolant connections at opposite end to electrical connections
- 5QE915684BJ - I think it's from the Audi e-Tron, single AC input, coolant connections on the right side when looking from the connector end
- 5QE915684BC, 5QE915684BK - From Porsche Taycan, dual AC input, coolant connections on the right side when looking from the connector end
Another indication that they're the 11 kW version is the additional part number of TYPP110G10V01, TYPP110G10V03, TYPP110G10V04, TYPP110G10V05 (compared to the e-Golf/e-Up! ones that had an ID starting with TYPP072...., am not yet sure which ones are 7.2 kW on a single or dual phase or even older TYP036... for 3.6 kW single phase chargers).
Based on this NITSA document (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/ ... 0-9999.pdf) for the Audi e-tron on page 98, it connects to the charging port, LEDS, lock, cover and temperature sensor.

I have the 5QE915684AD version on the way, first step is to work out the pinouts and talk to it. I might try with a spare BMU I have and VAGCOM.

Well now we have CAN logs so all thats left is to work out the pinout and connector part numbers and sourcing. Any takers?

Nobody eh? Ah well, more glory for me then I suppose. So I fought my way through the various VW tech info pages. My charger is from a 2021 Seat Mii but looks to be the same pinout wise anyway to the EGolf. Now I'm off to reboot out of Windoze 10 and internet gomeplorer as fast as the reset button will permit ...

I think this particular charger is 11kW 3phase. Kind of obvious from 5 pin AC input connector...

Well, the charger arrived along with charge port and some cables.
The 60 pin signal connector is TE part number 2208272-1 which they helpfully have no data available to mere mortals :

A quick search on Ali gives a possibility :

Charger has 2 CAN busses, 12V and GND and two hvil wires. On application of 12v no can is sent and charger goes asleep after approx 10 secs.
Sending any CAN msg gets it to wake and send 2 ids of its own.

No I wont be taking it apart. The plan is to reverse engineer the CAN messages needed to make it work outside a VW so it can be used in conversions.

Made a Github repo for the charger to start collecting data:

What do you mean sweep? Did you use your auto transformer and move it up and down?

I got a VW E-Golf charger, you guys think it be the same canbus controlls?
I have gotten myself quite setup with some testing gear now so might as well give this ago. Different pinout though, what is best way to get me some of that VW service manual info?

For anything VW I go onto https://erwin.volkswagen.de/erwin/showHome.do
Then enter the chassis number and download all the wiring diagrams, not sure about signal info but it has all the right diagrams, €7 per hour but I've managed to download full vehicle diagrams in that time

Got a Golf PHEV charger in the post this morning from Germany. 150 Euros. At first glance CAN messages from this model seem idential to the logs in DomT repo so it does look to be the case that there are different CAN messages used in different models. Also it seems from the wiring that the PHEV charger manages the charge port whereas the Mii version does not. Updated some logs in the repo with first bench test result.

I pulled a log of my charger which I believe is from an Egolf. Some can message IDs match with Damiens Golf Phev charger and some are unique.

So after a bit of digging we have some good news on the 60 pin data plug that seems common to all the chargers.
VW part number : 5Q0906379. Ordered from my local dealer for 21 Euros. Will have next week and confirm fit.

Gotten the HV orientation and figured the ground pin on the AC input.
I have an variac coming and got a HV DC power supply that I will connect up to do more reverse engineering. If only I could find some more reverse engineering on canbus of a Golf-E or GTE then we can make sense of the logs.
Have you sent one of the DomT logs into the charger to see if it spits out other new ids?

No I've not done any more work on the charger today got distracted. Agree there seems to be very little information available on the VW ev can. My plan is to get the data plug wired up with the necessary pins to connect to the charge port and lock actuator before messing about with can. I suspect this will involve some old school work on the raw messages without benefit of a dbc or other info. It also looks like a temp sensor in the charge port is wired to the charger so that will need to be spoofed. I also can't tell from the diagrams how the lock actuator and or position feedback is wired. So more fun on that side. I think the end result of access to a cheap on board charger solution is worth it.

Is this welded one (5QE915681BP) 2 or 3 phase? There is L1-N and L2-N sweeps on the github, in log there is 0x1BFE2208 which might be L3, but it have more zeros than others.
Oh wait, perhaps VW marking TypP072 mean 7.2kW (2ph) and as Jalovick mentioned TypP11 is 11kW (3ph).

Neither charger is 3 phase.
So the data connector uses 2 pin sizes. TE part numbers : 5-968221-1 and 1241608-6.
Both available on the usual suppliers like Mouser, RS etc and on Ali for much better prices.

Charge port temp sensor. While I dont have a Golf charge port I do have a loan of the CCS combo port from the Mii. Its AC temp sensor is reading 1067R at approx 15C ambient temp.
