Motor mount ideas ?

I have my leaf/gearbox setup suspended in the engine bay now (BMW 2002 1973)

I need to fab up some motor mounts, the original ICE was mounted to the sub frame. It doesn't look possible to do this as the motor sits very close to the original mount on one side, and looks like I will have to cut the other mount out as it in the way off the coolant pipes of the motor and the steering parts are in the way.

My next thought is to build a cradle out of box section steel and either welding it to the cars chassis rails with mounts attached to the cradle . Do you think that this a ok idea. I'm open to suggestions . Here's some pics as the motor sits now.

My only concern is it will taking the weight from the end of the motor not in the middle, and its only a small single mount holding the gearbox end.

Leaf motor mounts are designed to be fitted to the subframe. If your car does not have a subframe i would advise you weld a cradle from steel tubing so motor would fit with original mounts. This cradle you fit directly to subframe mounts without rubber shocks.

Do you have some vieuws so we can see dimensions? I hardly can see what the situation is. Maybe some angled pictures?

i would follow this approach..:

First i would decide where to 'grab' the motor ideally.

Second how do you get there with a tube or angle or what ever the distance is...

Third how do i make it all stiff.

I like the plan B idea partly because it saves building a sub frame. But those bolt through bushes have very little give and it can be more difficult to line up the bolt holes when installing the motor, hopefully something that doesn't need to happen too often.

If you go with plan A with the bolt on subframe, I have been advised in the past to put a card shim in between the two mating flanges before bolting up tight and welding the assembly to the chassis. Removing the card afterwards will give you the clearance you will need for reinstalling.
I am thinking that the subframe will be easier to line up for fabricating as it is more accessible.

Ok i would do this:

- Non square steel tube 3mm wall.
- 60mm*30mm*3mm

Chop 2 square sections out (left and right 40mm hight) and drop it in the current shape. So it has overlap to the extreme left en on the right the same.
Now you can weld quite some length and consider the tube as fixxed.
The benefit of doing this is that you increase the stiffness of the chasis also.

The next step is using two angled pieces of steel one side mounted to the motor, the other comes above your just welded in steel bar and leaves room for a rubber standing mount. job done.
