Variable throttle response

Post by Greenbeast »

I did post this in the nissan section but then it occurred to me, it's not unique to any given donor system.

Forgive me if this is common knowledge or a common thing to do but it occurred to me that a variable response throttle might be handy given I am converting a 4x4, I am keeping the transmission and therefore the stock low range box.
But presumably with low end torque of an electric motor I don't really need the low range gears I just need a way to make the throttle less responsive?
Make sense?

Hi Greenbeast. Do you mean the throttle will ramp up slower or reduce power ?

I'm thinking of something akin to an 'eco' button on a production EV. But more specifically to dampen throttle response to make off roading (low range driving) more practical.
So you hit the button and you then need more exaggerated foot motion to rev the motor

Are you going to be using a setup which communicates via CAN?

Yes, I think so. A Nissan leaf based system with can throttle and OE vcu

Is this an option ? Eco mode, 0 - 100% pedal travel giving 0 - 100% inverter output.
Normal mode 0 - 50% pedal travel giving 0 -100% inverter output ?
So less pedal travel gives more output in Normal mode.
I am sure other forum members will have some alternatives :-)
Could be done by altering throttle pot output using an analogue circuit if not using CAN, I would suggest too.

You think of varying throttle by mixing two pots? You have your throttle pot which is linear from 0 to 100%. Then you use second pot to pull linear function diagonaly down or up creating hyperbolic or logarytmic function. This would work by changing from eco to sport mode seamlessly.
