Sweet! An MGR Project. I don't know if I've ever actually seen one.

The MGR is my backup plan for whey my 260lb forklift motor --> transmission --> old differential just doesn't work properly. It's also maybe my plan for the front part of AWD.

Can't wait to see more on this.

But wait... the criticism!

I dunno, maybe it melts, maybe it's fine. I really really really want to find out just how badly it may or may not need some limited cooling.

Good work! I have a question about this motor, what do you think is it possible to put two of those motors to left and right rear axle? Would they fit side by side for example to 300 series rear axle? I thought to lock the differentials and so we could get better traction, then open diff, in slippery conditions.

You'll need to confirm that and look at the impact on the body shell. The good news is they are very cheap so it's easy to buy one and try it

No seriously, that was my alternative plan in case the shaft would be too hard to drill. To cut a triangle splice into the shaft and weld it there. Of course i planned doing it in the lathe. Did you at least put a pin inside both shaft holes?

So I found a potential source of connectors for the MGR. I happened to have 3 Gen 2 prius battery to inverter plugs. Massaged off the plastic with a mallet and got 3 nice large connectors that fit the MGR terminals perfectly. Wouldn't be surprised if they were the same part.

There's two gen2 Prius's that hit the local salvage yard two weeks ago, maybe I'll go harvest those connectors....

I've tried to just pull Lexus cables out of inverter side plug and insert them into prius's inverter side plug, but they won't fit. Terminals profile and lenght are different, as well as latching hole size. Cable diameter is also slightly different - when I pulled prius sealant rubber on Lexus cable, it ripped.

As you folks know I hate warm and dry climates so I spent a few hours rolling around on the tarmac today until I got soaked and cold. Ahhh so refreshing Anyway subframe is back in the car, only needed a small bit of cutting to accomodate the mods but wow did my favorite automaker ever build a car as tough as the E39! Back to base soon and we'll see about making those wheels turn.

Thank you Damien! This is like an early Xmas present for my VW project. It’s tempting to hop in and copy but I know that with my limited knowledge and experience I have to be patient and wait to see it driven by a zombie!

Folks I'd just like to announce that due to impending life changes for me this project has been handed off to forum member paaa who will be continuing the build and updating the thread.

I will indeed, First task was to get the car wired up to roll it off the transporter. For this I made use of 3 of the now infamous valence 18v batteries and a Nissan Leaf contactor box a spdt switch , and a small 12v battery I had handy. The only goal in this was to move car off trailer. I did have some fun parking the car out of the way. Before anything is said , car has handbrake half on and 12v supply gets disconnected if cable to throttle gets tight https://photos.app.goo.gl/ioT52UTaCcQovBBi6

54v moving a comparatively heavy modern BMW with it's handbrake partially on, makes me all the more confident that 240ish volts could get the job done in the VOLTswagen Squareback
