GS450h Inverter Currents

Post by NoobMaster »

Hello all.

I’m not sure if this post is best as a stand alone question or in another thread so moderators please feel free to (re)move it if it’s in the wrong place :?

The Wiki page for the GS450h inverter.. describes the Current limits for the inverters for MG1 and MG2 as Unknown’s “x” and “y”

Has anyone tested how much current they will actually handle?
450+amps reported to the VCU according to Damiens ISA current shunt in the Super Yacht out on a run...??

Damien’s video on testing a Toyota inverter to 300+ amps RMS with fingers in said ears waiting for a bang was amusing :D
But the coolant pump failed not the inverter! 8-)

Yeah this would be good to know , though I'm not sure it will be clear until we've blown a unit up :D

Depends on the input voltage.

If you are passing over torque commands to the normal gs450 inverter it should limit any motor currents to within the limits of the inverter.

So even large changes in torque should not push the inverter beyond it's limits.

Who wants to stay within the conservative factory current limits when asking for MORE Torque? ;)

I didn't think it was short on torque with MG1 and MG2 spinning up :)

Everyone is obsessed with this. I get at least one email a day asking me how much power or current or how does the e65 work if its not getting 650v or blah blah. I'll repeat what I know from actual data :

2.5 tons of 7 series bmw going like a rocket up through 90mph , 5000rpm on mg2 , crappy battery sagging under 300v and STILL PULLING! I don't know anything else.
I'm going to need a hacksaw

Chassis Dyno rather than Butt Dyno? Maybe save 100,000 emails a day? :?

A good time to remind people that it took a morning to install a GS450H 'transmission' into a BMW 7 series and with another day's effort you could wire up a battery, install some cooling and put the car on a dyno.

If you want definitive measurements please do the work and publish the results in the wiki 8-)
