Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Exactly! If the BMS will work with Tom's controller then I may have finally found the battery pack I need...
Of course, I'll probably change my mind next week, but that's good enough for now.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
It's not unusual for cells used in hybrids.
They're slung underneath a tank (7 series)... why make them lightweight?

True! 120kg will barely register on one of those things. That's 2/3 the entire weight of my bike!!Kevin Sharpe wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:48 am They're slung underneath a tank (7 series)... why make them lightweight?

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Considering its a G rev car they probably need the weight to make people think its a real BMW:)

How many amps do you expect to be able to safely pull from these?
If at first you don't succeed, buy a bigger hammer.

Battery just arrived. No idea on power beyond what is listed on newtis. Will find out when driving.

Apparently the cells are Samsung SDI 34 or 37 Ah, but not found a data sheet anywhere yet...

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I found a few news articles discussing the hybrid that stated the electric motor was good for 111hp (82kW). Based on voltage that works out to about 230 amps? Someone check my math.Jack Bauer wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 1:48 pm Battery just arrived. No idea on power beyond what is listed on newtis. Will find out when driving.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
They upgraded that pack to ~12kWh in later revision of that plugin fleet.
Not sure it's only achieved via denser battery chem or increased size (number of modules) of the pack (or some combo of thereof)..

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
So the canbus for these batteries is NOT identical to the I3/I8/Mini.
The command messages do not follow the same structure.
0x80-0x85
D1-D8
D4 commands the starting of measurents for the I3 CSC modules
D5 commands it, or atleast it seems, for these Hybrid packs.
As I do not have a module I cannot try testing some more findings, but taking captures from Damien one should atleast be able to play back the command message to get the info out of each brick.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Most of the BMW hybrid packs seem to have 26Ah modules. I just picked up a 330E pack, which has five modules, rather than the six in the pack Damien acquired.
I unloaded it from the van and dismantled it this morning. Really nicely put together!
I weighed a module at 12.7Kg, which equates to something like 120Wh/Kg.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Yeah the 3 series packs seem to be 5 module. Five and seven series have 6.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
That's the pack I'm looking at. Waiting for my new conversion car to be delivered so I can measure up but I'm hoping to squeeze one in under the bonnet. Might be a little optimistic. Very grateful for anything you discover about them though.SciroccoEV wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 4:33 pm Most of the BMW hybrid packs seem to have 26Ah modules. Guessing these will follow the same CAN message pattern as the 530 packs?
Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Does anyone have a module they could get some rough dimensions from?
I've been working on a project to refresh the hybrid system in a pair of Gen1 Honda Insights and so far Plan A has failed miserably and would probably end up setting fire to the car, plan B costs more than the car and after seeing Damien's video last night the BMW packs look almost perfect.
3 modules gives the right volts and no matter what battery/BMS combo was picked I have to do some coding to make it talk the special Honda protocols.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Including the bms module on the end they are aproximatley 400mm x 180mm x 110mm
Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Superb! Thanks!
They looked bigger in the video But that is really quite compact for the capacity. Now to find a good cheap 5 or 7 series pack and start messing with the CAN.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I have two 330e packs and one 530e pack. They are all the same size as i understand it. The BMS modues are a diferent shape on the 530e so that they can fit into the space but I think they do the same job. The 530e pack also has an extra module.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
I believe the 330e packs have 5 modules and 530e and 740e have 6. The bms modules can be unclipped and mounted on the top or sides.

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Thanks all, these modules are PERFECT for my project. Now please stop buying them all up for a little bit to give me a chance

Re: Info on BMW hybrid battery packs?
Got my eye on one on ebay but the seller has just admitted it has been sat for almost a year. What is the likelihood of it being kaput after being sat for so long?
