Wanted: electric car

Post by unkel »

I know it's a long shot, but you never know. I'm in Dublin, Ireland and I want an electric car conversion. Anything considered, but it:

1. Must be road legal in Ireland (NCT)
2. Must be at least 20 years old (so it qualifies for classic insurance)

Range is not important, it doesn't have to have a battery or it's ok if the battery is dead - I can sort that out myself. It doesn't have to have any on board charging or even 12V charging, I can sort that out myself too. I don't have a garage and I am unable to do any structural work, hence the requirement of it being roadworthy and road legal.

Pretty sure if it's being reclassed as an EV (tax-wise, then it may not be insurance as classic if it's to be driven as a daily driver.

I'm open to correction on that

Here's the correction :-)

I had the 27 year old Red Arrow (officially converted to electric - motor tax €120 per year) insured as a classic car with FBD. It was obviously not a daily driver. For classic insurance you need to have normal insurance on a daily driver too. There usually are annual mileage limitations too.

We had a classic Mini as our only car for a while, getting it insured via mainstream insurance companies is troublesome to impossible. One gets ridiculous quotes if you get one at all. First Ireland was able to get a reasonable one.

The car failed the NCT with work needing done, including some structural stuff that I can't handle. So I took out the BMW PHEV pack and the Brusa charger that I recently bought for the car and sold them to members on here that I met at the hackerspace meet in Dublin, for what I paid for them

I then donated the car to Damien Maguire, hopefully he will get his Red Arrow back on the road!

Damien's got a Vimeo (Patreon) vid on the resurrection of the Red Arrow. I'm sure it'll eventually be publicly available.

He's just got new sills for it, and needs to repair the trailing arm pockets. Rust. But he popped a couple packs in the boot and drove it about his yard last week.

Yep the car drives fine. Hookup any battery over about 115V plus a 12V battery and the car drives, everything electric works, no warning lights on the dash, etc. I had hoped that was the car sorted for me then, but alas the NCT said no.
