How to attach an image to your post? [SOLVED]
Am I missing something (probably!)? Is there a better way to upload images to posts? At the moment i'm having to save the image to my PC, then upload it to an image hosting site 'flikr' in my case and then copy the BBCode, which while it works is a bit janky. Most other images I see on here seem lik...

Re: UK IVA Modifications
I hadn't given this any thought until now! Using a Tesla SDU means that I immediately lose the engine, transmission, and drive axle! Fortunately, I still have the other 3 items unmodified: chassis, suspension, steering, which gives me just enough points to keep my registration. I am working under t...

Re: New here swift Motor home
Thanks for working all that out Johannes the great majority of that has gone over my head. are you saying that the end figure would be consuming 300 watts per Kilometre, so whatever battery pack i manage to install ,I am to divide the battery pack by 300 W to get an approximate range. when the Moto...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
According to the seller, BK means "oil flooded" and should have a longer life. I don't know what they exactly mean with oil flooded. PTFE often has certain additives to improve friction and dry run, so maybe they mean an additive. Have a look here for the actual spec for the Ceimin seals ...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
I'm not aware of any OE suppliers of that seal. Please post here if you find one! The Merc B250E uses a Tesla motor, and there are seal's available which you should be able to order/by from any Merc dealer. I can let you know the part number for each from the drawing below - let me know if any look...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Thanks, but the rotor seal doesn’t seem to be illustrated on that drawing? I suspect they consider it an integrated part. This is the seal in question (it includes the metal outer): A7DB8B22-E2CE-4EC0-A0CE-409D3F9055A8.jpeg Is that number 56 in the image? Mercedes: A2429970170 CONNECTION FITTING Co...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Hello! I am also repairing a large motor now, I ordered a ceimin 30x55x8 oil seal, do you know if it is possible to find an original or high-quality such oil seal in the USA? Since I'm not in the US I'm not aware of any OE suppliers of that seal. Please post here if you find one! The Merc B250E use...

Thanks Ali for alerting me to this thread - going to follow this with great interest Ben! Re: MG F - Outlander Rear differential with Prius Gen 2 Inverter.
So a bit of a change in plans in the last week. Last week I killed my Teensy based VCU in a Prius charging test incident. I decided to ditch the Prius inverter for charging and picked up an Outlander Charger/DC-DC. Got it talking on the bench and have updated the VCU code to run the Charger. I can ...

Re: Porsche Panamera EV
Continous power isn't relevant for EV use, except on the race track. I wouldn't worry too much here and see what practise says as even prolonged stretches will end after some minutes Maybe that's why most EV's aren't rated for towing - or when they are they can only tow light trailers? because they...

Re: Porsche Panamera EV
The SDU is an induction motor isn't it - so I believe there is more a fundamental limit/difficulty on removing heat from the spinning rotor, PM motors tend to heat their stators so its much easier to remove heat from these.

Re: Porsche Panamera EV
From a quick 'google' the continuous power of the SDU is 35kw. (47hp in the ICE part of my brain) Not sure that would be enough for cruise in a big car like the Panamera if you encounter some long hills? Don't know if that's just a limitation of the Tesla cooling system? combined with lack of air in...

I would remove it.
As mentioned it is a tunned mass damper - mass and position would have been fine tuned by Lexus in NVH labs.
You are completely re-engineering the drive train so effectively making this null and void.

Re: BMW i3 or Nissan EM57 engine? Cheaper and easier?
How much power do you need for your project? I checked Leaf motors on ebay (in the UK) and they seemed much more expensive than a year or two ago. I'm sure they were more like a couple hundred (pounds) but now over 1000 - nearly at Tesla motor levels! Prius/Toyota trans-axle would be hard to beat if...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK
Would be interesting to see if DVLA allowed a reduction or zero rated the VED if someone fitted a modern low CO2 emission engine to a gas guzzler ? That might prove a case possibly ? Could it be DVLA are basing their decisions on the first registration of the vehicle after manufacture ? That's a de...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK
It occurs to me that we need to establish what was the INTENT of those who introduced those regulations. It seems clear to me that as written, their intention was to include all electrically propelled cars as 'Exempt vehicles'. However it is possible that their intention was actually not that and t...

Re: Battery opinions while I have the car apart?
Are those dealer costs or retail list prices? Those part numbers seem to show as $1000-1500usd which is well beyond exchange rates. However, the US prices could have incoming dealer freight costs baked in. those are the official recommended retail prices that have been published. I presume if some ...

There 17 type 2's and 16 type 1's. Difference is the polarity position. Together 33 modules which equals the total pack. The unit 14 pack is the smaller Taycan pack. Those prices are new dealer. TayCan modules. Pouche: LG Chem E66A 16x2.8kwh = 44.8kwh Capacity 16x11Kg = 176kg Weight 600Amps peak without cooling. That's reasonably interesting apart from dealing with Porsche tax. Interesting and somewhat disappointing. I would have hoped to see more higher output and lighter options as the years wear on but it seems these 10 year old cells still rank pretty high in function and robustness compared to other mass produced options. Seems power density and energy density are bo...
