Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
- Rotor temp is hard to measure (no direct contact) This seems to be a huge research area including many tech papers and patents filed to estimate. Tesla's 2010 patent ( https://patents.google.com/patent/US8773058B2/en?oq=20120007532 actual invention might be a couple of years before patent filing ...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Lots of people are not fans of waterless coolants for that reason: with water being "1", glycols typically have a thermal capacity of around .68-.72. In the ICE world so very many people seem to be chasing cures for overheating, and waterless coolant just isn't the right fix for almost al...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
This gearbox has 10:1 ratio. Starting with high RPM motor all the way to driving the half shafts. Its a wide range to trade off efficiency (thinner ATF) to high wear protection (multi weight gear oil for rear diffs such as 80w-90) LDU also has no damper for the applied torque (ICE's gradual torque ...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
I ordered a single gallon of Evans waterless coolant, which will arrive early next week. The PWM doo-dad will arrive . . . today, Amazon says . . . [goes out and checks mailbox] . . . yup, got it. Personally I'm not a fan of 'waterless coolant' It has a lower heat capacity than water meaning for yo...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
All make sense. However, the rotor's shaft locks in 30mm diameter and ~8mm seal width so these can't be changed. Only remaining design variables are material + shape + shaft surface prep. You had a question previously following your conversation with a seal supplier - I was just trying to help. A 3...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Thanks. Indeed, it was something like feet/min. Basically amount of surface area over time period which makes total sense. So now we've got 7 seal interest which is great. However, been thinking more on doing own seal design.... - The most important factor is probably seal material (PTFE blend) and...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Yes, they sell engines and batteries only if they install them, but it seems to me that with the right to repair, the sale of the oil seal is really necessary, because it's just wrecking, changing the whole engine instead of replacing the rubber according to the regulations To give them their due :...

Good work,
I followed a VX220 the other day to work - looked spectacular; and tiny! - with all these modern bloated cars around you forget what car dimensions used to be!

I am indeed considering sending the prototype shafts to someone like this to remanufacture: https://berrisford.co.uk/product/custom ... ny-length/
High torque & high traction will be finding the weakest link!

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Maybe we just have to live with a bit of a leak and install a drain and 12V pump it back to the coolant reservoir (drill small hole next to reluctor wheel etc etc). Also check a good related thread on ENG-TIPS.com. From this thread (FWIW): We have seen this before!: FKM is a fluoro rubber, and the ...

Re: 2 nissan leaf motors 1 car
Sorry, I will try to be more precise. I am trying to convert a Mitsubishi mighty max and I would like to keep a low budget and the Nissan Leaf seems to have a good price to performance. But I don't know if it has enough power to get up the mountains in my area, especial when snowy. So I was wonderi...

Hoping the stub axles fit the front - image.png Car is air suspension and is driven by an electric pump behind the front bumper. It also seems to hold air when parked. Nice to see the conversation on recycling fuel cars to EV's on a national newspaper, well done Jamie - presume that's you Bigpie :D Just a thought - from here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-vehicle-tax DVLA are 'misguided' in their interpretation of the actual law I wonder if they are also ...

VAG have an online portal for service information: I think for around 10€ per hour to download info required.

Parts schematic - seems lots of part number versions for different PR codes. Number 1 includes 19, 20 & 21.

SKF does not offer a seal with dimensions 30 x 55 x 8mm (d1 x D x b, using SKF symbols). I just received this info from SKF USA by email. Hello, thanks a lot for the info. Who do you think we can turn to? After all, someone makes these seals for Tesla, it is unlikely that they themselves Ceimin sea...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)
The Leaf design is my ambition. Like the GT86 conversion but attached to the 4wd transmission. From what I can find the 450h gearbox is just 50bhp, hardly enough for a 1.5 ton estate. The GS450H is apparently the same as the LS600H but without the transfer case. The LS600H motor peak power is 165Kw...

Re: Subaru Legacy Estate (diesel)
Far too complex, mechanically and electrically for me. I don't even want to think about how the speed of the two motors would be varied. I think the 450h parts would be very rare here. Not exactly a big seller. Subaru diffs and gearboxes are good for over 400bhp so 200 from the Leaf should be fine....
