Re: Cutting new splines onto a driveshaft
Hi, I'm (still) doing a conversion of an old Fiat 126, now using an Outlander rear motor. I need to connect the outlander rear driveshafts to the Fiat hubs. I could do the old cut and shut job on the driveshafts, but was wondering if anyone has found an engineering place that would take an existing...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Just thinking out loud! 1: How about an oil/ATF cooled rotor rather than coolant? I would think much less likely to leak - at the expense of lower heat transfer. 2: How does the model 3 front drive unit cool? This is also an induction motor - so will also get heated - and I can't see any coolant fit...

Re: Homebuilt Locost 7 - from Motorcycle engine to Leaf power!
Okay, so for fitting the battery, I've been playing Battery Tetris for a while and have a few options. Some of them I like, others not so much. Given that I really don't need a lot of range, I would like to keep the weight of the battery to a minimum - but I also need enough voltage to reach a top ...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
Academic papers and seal manufacturers say all seals leak. The key is the acceptable leak rate. Perhaps any seal we put in will leak at some rate. Anyway, Ceimin seal at 2k miles has no coolant drops on speed sensor. This is key: At some point any rotary seal will leak. There are no rotary seals in...

Re: In wheel motors & inverter with 20% increase in efficiency
So on the unsprung weigh front I believe it’s more of a ratio thing, I don’t know where the sweet spot is supposed to be but I know big unsprung weight on a light car = bad the same unsprung weight on a heavy car not so much…. Using my Seat Leon for a thought experiment: It has a common 225 45 17 t...

Re: In wheel motors & inverter with 20% increase in efficiency
The problem with removing the gear reduction is that electric motor torque scales with mass of electric motors. You need high torque and low speed for directly driving the wheels = heavy electric motor/ all of which is un-sprung weight which is very bad for vehicle driving dynamics/refinement. Havi...

Re: A completely different energy storage project
Hi Johannes, thanks for reading. I don't believe you are lazy at all🙂 But no that wouldn't do much... So for one tonne to rise 100m; 100m X 1000kg X 9.8m/s² = 980,000J 980,000J / 3600s = 272Whr storage!! Then we'd have to get the electricity in and out of the Leaf. So either through rails or flexib...

Re: Leaf gear box nismo LSD
I have replacement gear-sets in the works for the leaf gearbox, For this exact purpose! sadly this nismo lsd is not the right kind for a 4x4 application, as it will not transfer torque when there is 100% slip. A ATB would be ideal, I’m taking measurements of the leaf diff to see if it a “standard “...

Re: Where to obtain this Tesla SDU part?
Any ideas for somewhere to obtain this? MY SDU arrived with the coolant port broken on one of the inverter plates (they are FRP). I have not been able to find a yard that will sell one off an SDU. The online parts catalog just shows the entire SDU unit, and the output shaft seals... Both sides seem...

I have had my 1960 mini taken off the road due to holes drilled in the boot. They could not fault the EV, just the holes. All the ideas and plans discussed on this thread will be of no use if the DVLA just ignores them. I have a parliamentary petition on the subject and my MP has written 3 letters....

I presume the standard 'acoustic' covers including motor cover - and 3x transmission covers are present and correct? image.png image.png As mentioned I would check all the rubber mounts are 'free' and not in hard contact with the body? I would also try filling the void behind the motor with acoustic...

Re: Interference: How to measure and fix it?
What is your sensor grounding like?
I have had issues with interference in previous ICE DIY ECU projects which was caused by poor grounding.
Maybe you can use the same principles?

thanks for the extensive explanation. This theory is familiar to me, but I mean whether I can overload such a motor for a few seconds, say up to 250 kW. What are your experiences? I think i'd be checking on the differences between the 100kw & 150kw versions. If they are the same motors - then K...

Re: UK IVA Modifications
I informed the DVLA of my (2001) conversion 6 weeks ago. I finally got a response yesterday. It was essentially just asking for information I'd already provided. As expected, they are primarily just checking whether the chassis has been modified, and hence whether an IVA is required. They've also a...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
So far, haven't found/heard any info on failure modes. Is the leak during rotation? while sitting? reverse spin direction? This rebuilder claims its the axial play on the bearings (I presume then suggest the shaft axial movement) is causing the leak in the video's comments This doesn't quite make s...

A bit of a rant . . . I don't know why any engineer would have reason to assume that a seal would ope...

Re: Tesla Large Drive Unit (LDU) Motor Teardown and maintenance
True but the ICE drivetrain ratio is quickly reduced via transmission shifting as the car gets moving, So not staying at this ratio for long. In any case, curious the source of LDU's gears mud production and weather its any worse than typically gearboxes which has clutch material wear as well (less...
