Re: The VCU change discussion

Dont you guys think arguing here is counter productive? We're supporting a lot people who have purchased boards and struggle to get them working. I think it's important to raise these issues not only for the customers but also in the vain hope that next time a major change is considered it will be ...

Re: The VCU change discussion

We aren't buying a commercial product, there's no retail packaging etc. So, what about the people who have purchased products and are none technical? Are they not relevant once they've spent their money? A unified hardware makes plenty of sense, reducing the burden of maintance. One platform and on...

Re: The VCU change discussion

Yes the SDU received a new voltage regulator, so did the charger board. These changes are completely backward compatible and the new parts operate well within their specs. They also receive systematic logic-level testing. Of course no 1000 hour burn in tests on a million dollar testbench. So, we ha...

Tesla SDU, Tesla LDU AFAIK they have new versions which are untested in any number of deployments. Is this incorrect? Leaf drop-in OK Prius Gen2 & Gen3 boards Which versions? We seem to have several. They are pretty much plug&play and used in commercial products (Zero EV, Stealth EV etc.). ...

PS Can anyone tell me how to tag someone in a reply on here without including their whole post? I assume it's annoying the way I've done it! I don't think tagging works here (it didn't last time I tried) but most forums use @slanceley (did that work?). I just edit the relevant part of the post to m...

None? They all seem to be in flux and unsuitable for end users. What do you think is stable today?

Re: The VCU change discussion

Edit: actually it is quite a bit better then the Leaf board pre-FOC :) Unfortunately it doesn't work like that out of the box :( Fiachra, James, and Nick all had a lot of work to do to get this working. We have another ~5 people from our course in the same boat. This is difficult. Edit: just one ex...

Re: The VCU change discussion

I see the problem now. They started their conversion with an unfinished system trusting it would see further development. Like Leaf drop-in board customers were when FOC software was still under development. That's always a gamble of course. That may be true but they are still your customers and ma...

Re: CCS EVSE and Car side

Their VCUs don't magically stop working. Unfortunately they only 'just' work now and will require a lot more effort to get them usable. In reality they will be forced to replace the VCU's in most cases because they lack the skills to support them going forward. As an aside nobody else complained th...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

In any case, in the linked page, I see no 'rules of modification'. Just the steps you need to take - in Ireland. Fiachra and Damien have both had conversions registered in Ireland as individuals. It's not hard if you follow the rules. In the UK James and several other attendees from last years cour...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

What 'rules' have been broken and where are these 'rules' available to the general public? Not been my concern previously, but obviously I need to peruse them in great detail. So a link to them would be much appreciated. Start with the DVLA requirements for keeping the original registration number;...

Re: CCS EVSE and Car side

I'm confused. The designs are open, the code is open. I'm sure if you hit into a specific problem someone would be able to help. We're trying to convert thousands of vehicles not ones and twos. I also wonder which version of the hardware and software you think we should deploy... the 'old' version ...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I refute again your comment that "It isn't difficult, you just have to understand and follow the rules". That is simply not true and DVLA themselves clearly do not know how to do that. And yet companies are able to get their conversions registered by following the rules; https://openinver...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

Well I would counter that by asking if they have not been informed, how do they know about these chassis modifications and come to the belief this needs to be tightened up. Ever heard of YouTube? Not difficult to identify UK cars that clearly violate the DVLA points system. This one for example; ht...

Re: CCS EVSE and Car side

Can you be more precise as to this change? The only changes recently that I've seen have been due to parts availability changes as I understood it. The only parts shortage is from your chosen PCB vendor. All the parts for the 'old' VCU are widely available and AFAIK none are EOL today (and even if ...

I don't wish to be antagonistic, but your reply indicates a complete lack of experience dealing with the DVLA. I'm from the UK and was involved in a company modifying vehicles. We had no problem with DVLA historically. The recent problems are because of the widespread abuse of the system in the las...

Re: Registering and changing tax class of an EV conversion in the UK

I guess the question is, have DVLA been made aware of any chassis modifications? We know that many UK conversions have not notified DVLA regarding chassis modifications. That is one of the reasons why DVLA are now tightening up and I suspect you're headed for an inspection regime like much of Europe.
