Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Many moons ago I bought an e46 pedal for the swap because I was familiar with it. Same pedal I used in my e30 but, of course I didn't look at the pedal and compare how it mounted vs what is in the car. Obviously, with a top mounted pedal fitting the e46 pedal would have required a bunch of work to g...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Were you able to get any more information on what cells Electric GT are selling? What are you doing for a BMS? Looks awesome so far! -Matt I don't know the specific technology they are using but they are pouch cells. Their literature says they will do 960 Amps in a 16 module configuration and they ...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

I didn't realize you were so far into your project already and committed to the Tesla LDU or I wouldn't have suggested going with the GS450h transmission. If Tesla drive units were so available here in New Zealand as they are in USA or Europe I'd totally use them. Ya it really would be a good optio...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Updates. 1. Batteries are ordered - should be here in 7 weeks or so. I'll have 42.5 kwh which should be enough for some fun. 2. I was bothered by the smell of the carpet....because at some point somebody put a ton of fragrance in there. So...you know...to get the carpet out you have to strip the int...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

The next big big step is the batteries. I'm glad I've waited because the options continue to evolve and get better. The options available of course also depend on what you want. Here is my current criteria: 1. High performance - I want to be able to pull 300+hp out of the motor easily. This requires...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Shout out to Jon Volk for paving the way on this one. I totally used his method and copied his design a bit. I stole a page out of teslabimmer's book for the rear and side mount. Shout out to him for leading the way here. I toyed with fabricating it in my garage but with my limited equipment it woul...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Axle time! After quite a few "no you can't do that's" from machine shops I stumbled across a 4x4 forum and apparently shortening axles is a regular thing in that world. Dutchman in Utah specializes in this kind of work and it was incredibly painless and cheap. Here are the two axles before...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

I took the advice and cranked up the welders so I've gotten some great looking welds and some crappy looking welds. Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Alright - now I feel like this thing will have the structural integrity it needs to pull it out of the jig. This is going to hurt ground clearance so I may come up with a better design when I get it all together. Last thing I'm going to work on before I do that is installing the front motor mount. h...

Progress this weekend. I now have the two top lateral support bars completely welded in. Re: 1993 FD Rx7

Small progress. I have the motor mocked up at the right level and it allowed me to figure out how much more to cut out. I have one small bit I'm going to cut tomorrow and then I'll move on to fortifying the subframe so I can take it out of the jig. I mocked it up with the tesla axles - these things ...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

I did some final cutting on the rear subframe. At this point, I think my next step is to mock it up with the actual drive unit so I can add a cross support that will keep everything stable while I unbolt it from the jig. I originally planned to take this somewhere for final welding but...with the lo...

Pulling it in to where it will live for the next few months. Once I start taking this thing apart it will only leave with that motor mounted. Quick note - I got a quickjack over the holidays that runs off of 12v. It is rad. Not as good as having a lift obviously but I love it and I feel so much safe...

Re: 1993 FD Rx7

After that I added a bar across that will eventually have the motormount attached to it. I went with 1.75 DOM steel tubing that is spec'd for roll cages. I figured if it's strong enough for that it's probably strong enough for this application. When I start cutting the center section out it will hel...
