Re: Lexus GS450H VCU Support Thread

Hi all, apologies for probably too simple a question. I am a mechanical engineer way out of my comfort zone with all this talk of coding, and I do not have capabilities to write my own code. I have the "classic" VCU (ver2). In a video about a year ago ( https://youtu.be/SdLmId5oG7w ) Damie...

Re: GS450H motor in RX8 transmission tunnel - Does it fit?

Thanks,

I also found a man who has already put the gs450h trans into an rx8 tunnel on Instagram. So for anybody else wondering the same, it does physically fit.

I'm going to go ahead and do the same!

GS450H motor in RX8 transmission tunnel - Does it fit?

Has anybody tried fitting the GS450h motor/transmission into a Mazda RX8 transmission tunnel? I was slowly converting a GS450h to EV using damien control board, but I've now bought a very cheap RX8 and considering swapping all the work I've done so far into that instead. Anybody tried it already? In...

Re: Lexus GS450H EV Conversion - Anybody else done one?

What made you choose Nissan Leaf battery pack? Are you thinking of keeping original NiMH pack and adding Nissan Leaf as extra? I chose it because I got a good deal on brand new modules, and because of the form factor being easy to build stacks/modules. No the original pack is too big in volume and ...

Re: Lexus GS450H EV Conversion - Anybody else done one?

Hi Dan, I'm also thinking about converting my GS450h, but I want a PHEV. It's my daily drive, can't afford to remove ICE. Some days I might need to go over 100km. Hi, just saw this post, did you make any progress on the PHEV project? That sounds like it would be a good car, the battery compartment ...

Re: Lexus GS450H EV Conversion - Anybody else done one?

Hello - Reviving this thread as it is still relevant. Has anybody else managed to convert a GS450H? My project is still ongoing, but I'm interested to know if the other systems on the car still operate happily with the Engine and VCM missing. i.e. the electrically actuated brake servo, EPAS, HV AC c...

Recommended/most used EV conversion Special Tools?

Hi all, I'm at the stage in my project where I'm going to be working with HV battery pack/harness junction box etc. Christmas is coming, so if there are any important tools I'm going to need I could use the opportunity to treat myself. Insulated spanners/screwdrivers? Special multimeter? (I have a b...

Re: GS450H inverter and motor - how much cooling needed? How big Rad?

Yeah very good point, the temperature differential between the coolant and ambient is much lower and therefore cooling potential per area of radiator will also be lower. Thanks for the replies, great to have a base of experience! Refreshing compared to the usual car forums! In the end I've decided t...

GS450H inverter and motor - how much cooling needed? How big Rad?

Hi, I'm converting a gs450h to EV (hopefully). I'd intended to keep the orignal engine rad and AC/rad and use the engine rad to cool the inverter/motor coolant. However the battery I'm looking at buying will be too long and will protrude through that area, so id have to get inventive with some small...

Re: Extracting 150kw from a Leaf 24kwh Gen2 Battery - Possible?

Thank you everybody for the really informative and understandable replies, this was just what I needed to know. Ok so I now understand that basically it will be my "tuning" within the setup of the VCU controller which will be ultimately responsible for how much current is drawn from the ba...

Re: Extracting 150kw from a Leaf 24kwh Gen2 Battery - Possible?

Ok so now I'm really confused Again apologies for my lack of electrical knowledge. I guess my question is, if I hook up the 24kwh leaf battery pack to the gs450h motor (with Damiens VCU board in between). What is the limiting factor for the power output? And what will be the failure mode? 1. The mot...

Re: Extracting 150kw from a Leaf 24kwh Gen2 Battery - Possible?

The 24 kWh BMS allows 110 kW discharge power and the 40 kWh allows 125 kW. Not sure about the 30. Ah ok, so the BMS is in control of how much power is drawn, set to a level that's safe for the battery. So if I did add more modules in parallel to up the power would I have to move to an aftermarket B...

Re: Extracting 150kw from a Leaf 24kwh Gen2 Battery - Possible?

OK, 2 leaf packs could probably be found within budget. I could probably go for one now and get the car running and working then add a second in the boot when I have a bit more confidence. I read on the wiki that running more cells in parallel within a pack was relatively easy, but running two packs...

Extracting 150kw from a Leaf 24kwh Gen2 Battery - Possible?

Sorry for a bit of a basic question, I'm muddling through this conversion as a mechanical/automotive guy. I'm converting a GS450h to EV, and aiming to make hit 150kw power, with roughly 60 miles range. I'm possibly buying a 24kwh Gen2 Leaf battery. From what I can see, it is rated to 228A current, s...

Outlander PHEV batteries - Why so cheap? Something wrong with them?

Hi, I'm currently on the hunt for batteries for my GS450h EV project. I've noticed that all of the cheapest Li battery packs available appear to be from Outlander PHEVS. Is there some reason why these are so cheap? I guess they are very common, but is there anything else that makes them so cheap? Re...

Well the print came out lovely 20210829_103515.jpg But having some issues fitting. The spacing between the two bolt holes is a few mm too short.
