Informing the DVLA of errors on the V5C can get you into an infinite loop of ever more errors.

Re: L210 gearbox
Field weakening is used to REDUCE the back EMF of the motor, reducing it's effectiveness as a generator. As motor rpm increases, it's output as a generator increases, so you would need to apply ever more voltage to keep it in the constant torque range. You can generate a bit more than battery voltag...

I was at Cenex LCV yesterday and one of the interesting conversations I has was with AIS.
They produce a fire protection fabric that can be applied inside a battery case. It is not expensive and offcuts are available for evaluation.

Re: Switched ADC BMS
Do I understand this correctly? BMS in itself can't control contactors Having the BMS control contactors is generally a bad idea because disconnecting the battery under load is a good way of killing inverters. You can get away with it in low power aplications, like power tools (they generally use M...

It shouldn't be a difficult task to 'bell out' the connections between the two connectors.

Re: Service Disconnects who why where ?
Not all OEM battery packs have a manual disconnect, the BMW hybrid packs don't for example. As long as you have contactors on both poles and some means of checking that those contactors have in fact opened that's OK. Stuck contactor detection is somethong you should really have anyway.

The simplest solution I can think of would be a nano and a uln2003 wired in parallel (or bigger fet, preferably through hole fet) that would give 100 percent for first second then ramp down quickly afterwards OBS you could go for lower powered chip than a nano but they are cheap on Ali and don't ne...

Re: VW Touran powered by Nissan Leaf [FINISHED]
TBH thats impressively low even with the spike! With solar and a battery i rarely dip below 10kwh a day! When i'm charging its usually over 30. I have a total of about 4kW of PV and 5kWh of storage with a 2.5kW inverter. The only EV I currently have in use is the 2007 AC G-Wiz with 14 modules from ...

Re: Wound rotor motors.
One set of problems that can happen with induction motors is unwanted current flowing through the bearings causing havoc to the hard coating on the ball bearings, to solve that, if this problem can occur they insulate bearings at both ends of the motor. You only need to insulate one bearing to prev...

Does that mean it has slip rings with carbon brushes for the rotor? Yes, the Zoe motor has a pair of sliprings. I found an image of the Zoe motor on the Speak EV forum. zoe temp.jpg There have been problems with the brushes, notably with carbon dust causing current leakage to the frame. The early Z...

You've got several low side output drivers, even on the first version of the VCU PCB design.

Re: Freelander EV With Gen1 Leaf electrics and EVBMW VCU
I take your point. Any suggestion how to achieve this? I've forgotten exactly which VCU you're using, but contactor control is often built in. The simplest automated setup I've done was on a 48V sysytem. I used a relay coil across the controller bus and a second relay coil across the precharge resi...

Re: Freelander EV With Gen1 Leaf electrics and EVBMW VCU
I'm not a fan of sequencing contactors by dead reckoning. You should really be monitoring the bus voltage and abandoning a precharge if it takes too long.

Re: EV car conversion hardware
As far as the insulation rating of the ceramic PTC heater cores is concerned, the peak voltage of a 240VAC waveform is about 340VDC (VAC * SQRT 2). They're not designed for water exposure though. A droplet can bridge between the elements and cause problems. The whole point of them being PTC, positiv...

That looks like a usefull refernce book, is it worth buying? It's a pretty good book, obviously a bit dated in places. It cost me something like £65 back in 1999 or so. There's a used copy on Amazon right now for £12, which is well worth it. The EV section of the book is based on work done by Motor...
