Re: BMW MINI E...ev battery to low to charge

I've heard anecdotally that some BMW systems have a "lockout" in the BMS. If the battery is discharged too low, or the vehicle is crashed, the BMS can go into a state where it will essentially brick itself. I dont know the specifics though. But if that is the issue, you may find that manua...

Re: Axle Removal

As for getting this style axles out, some have too sloppy of a bore for the retainer spring and the spring can get out of place to where it binds Hmm yeah, i ran into that issue with an Audi CV joint where the shaft was retained onto the joint with a snap ring. It came apart after much anger with a...

Re: Charging one battery from another as an alternative to parallel packs.

My understanding of big smps is that they will have a PFC stage to boost the internal DC bus up to a voltage higher than is required, then they buck down from there to the desired output voltage?

Re: Charging one battery from another as an alternative to parallel packs.

What happens if you feed DC into the AC input of a typical OBC (say a telsa Gen3 or one of the MG units)? Many switch mode PSU's i believe will happily accept DC on their input?

Re: Axle Removal

yeah you'll want to make a piece of steel with three holes, so your slide hammer is centred on the flange. Bolt your steel on where the CV attaches.

This is a wheel hub, but you'll want to end up with the same alignment:

Re: Axle Removal

try a bigger slide hammer :)

Failing that, a hydraulic press. But it will be a challenge getting it jigged up in such a way as to apply the force in the right direction

What ever you do make sure your pulling straight and not pulling from the side.

looks like circa 325A and 350v at the battery? so ~115kw

Is it still limited in software, or is that all it will give?

did you buy a pack? Or 8 "loose" modules? I wonder if they've come out the back door of a dealership that has replaced them under the warranty recall? IE they are ALL faulty? Seems very odd to have so many failures, it looks like all 5 modules have issues. In the warranty recalls its unusu...

I think the modules/cells are the same as the other BMW ones, they're just configured as 8s rather than 16s and theres twice as many.

Re: 2024 Best battery: 100kg limit

The main issue is the smaller hybrid packs are not as energy dense as they're setup for power. For instance the BMW packs are ~6.5kg per kWh, the VW ones are in the 8-9kg range. The best batteries are in the 4.5kg range, but are arranged in such a way that 100kgs of them isnt going to give you 400v....

Surprisingly small DC-DC output. Many OEM units seem to be in the 150A+ range.

Not exactly the same but potentially the same family of pedals, should be easy to compare.

I've used older bosch pedals that also use the same arrangement, its just a pair of variable resistors. The pins are jumbled about for whatever reason.

Re: LDU Forward and Reverse LV power issue

some sort of noise/interference tripping out the DC-DC converter?

The controller or inverter cant be pulling sufficient current itself to pull the DC-DC output down by that much, its hundreds of amps. But if the DCDC shut down, all the loads on the 12v would see the lead acid droop pretty quickly.

If you arrange the stubs so that they give the same overall spacing as the original VW trans, the stock VW shafts simply bolt right in like factory.

Those 6 lines appear to be inputs to a NAND gate. image.png The NAND takes the 6 fault signals, plus the output from the overcurrent comparator, and applies the NAND logic function. In effect, it will output low only if all 7 inputs are "high" Thus in normal operation, all 6 fault lines, a...

2" drop spindles and 2" springs should be the default for a C10 ;) You can investigate shorter dampers or even limiting straps. Some modified 4WD's have springs that come out of the seats by design, but they have some sort of cone arrangement to guide the spring back into position when it ...

Cutting springs gets a bad rap, but its one of those "it depends" things. Some springs like those shown here, are parallel at one or both ends. Cutting those (on the parallel end!) is generally fine, and it can work fairly well. As above, you end up with a shorter spring and a little bit m...

Re: Twining prius inverters. Implausible idea?

I imagine the range rover modules will be a little heavier per kwh than the MEB ones, but its probably not that much more, and you'll end up with a much simpler result with plenty power and voltage available to run the motor without worrying about boosting.
